Default 250R or 400ex

I'm looking to get my new toy, but i have some questions regarding which one to choose. First i was wondering if the 250R will keep pace with most of the newer machines out. Also i heard that the honda 400 ex would have less maintenance, and conume less gas. Any imput on the two would be greatly appreciated. I'm also looking at a 88 250R with the works suspensions, pipe, and a fresh rebuilt motor, if that helps at all. Thanks,
Nick

The 250R is a legendary bike and for good reason. Excellent handling, good ergonomics, parts are readily available, and the most copied chassis design ever. The 250R can be made to run with any of the new bikes on the market today. With the right port work, pipe, and carb they can surely hold their own. The 400ex will have less maintanance, but you're trading performance for reliability. A 400ex with the right mods (cam, more compression, good pipe) will be fast, but not as fast as today's 450's. If you're looking to buy a bike that is 17 years old, be prepared for more additional maintanance cost (bushings, bearings, seals). If I was buying another bike today, I would look for the most bike for the money available. The Z400/KFX400 fits in this category. If you want a 2-stroke, consider a later model Banshee. Also, some of the used 450's are starting to become reasonable. Hope this helps.

If you want a "project", get the R. If you want hours and hours of trouble-free riding, get the EX.

Ya those guys definetly have good points about both. The only thing is that you didn't say what kind of riding you would be doing, but you did say a toy so to me a toy is like gettting something and building it so I would get the 250r even though it would be more maitnence and money but it would probably be fun building it if thats what you were doing or riding it either way. Even working on them I think is fun I like to wrench on my quad unless I know a whole bunch of people that are going riding and I can't because mine is broken lol.

I would be mainly riding in the sand dunes or in the desert. And you hit the nail on the head, it is like a toy, and i like to be able to tinker. I'm also getting a really good deal on the 250R. Besides that i'm only 160lbs so the 250r with ported and polished head, and pipes, should be more than enough. Thanks for the input.

I'm hooked already. I got it last friday, and the thing does haul ***. I'm thinking about changing the sprocket size though, right now it has a 12-42 i believe. It was set up for the dunes, but i'm going to mostly be riding desert. I want to change the sprocket to like a 38-39. But thanks for all the help guys.
