I have been happy with riding my LTZ400 since i bought in in 2003. however i just feel like i want more power so I've decided to upgrade, but i cant decide which quad to buy. I mostly ride dunes, trails, and open (sandy) areas, but i may (sometime in the future) enter into amature racing. I'm choosing between a 2004 YFZ450 that was owned by a Yamaha employee and has a descent amount of mods - new rear swing are, 3/4 twist throttle, nerf bars, new handle bars, new cams, its been re-jetted, and maybe a couple other mods- a 2005 TRX450r or a LTR450. I need some help deciding what would be best for me. I realize the quads are fairly different but Im looking for the bike that will suit my needs the best for the best price. Once again I'm looking for a mainly trail bike that could possibly be turned into a racing quad. Any help is greatly appreciated.

 

What do you mean by "race"???? A cross country "race" is a lot different from an MX "race", which is a lot different from a desert "race"! And how tight are your "trails"???

I like the 450R for the open desert. It is a very stable high speed platform and absolutely flies.

I would pick the YFZ for play riding and MX.

I wouldn't pick either one for slower tight trails. There I like the 400EX.

 

well if i race it wold likely be mx. As for the trails, i generally dont ride trails that are too tight. However, i do, on accasion ride some tighter trails with whoops/bumpy sections.

 

I'd pick the one that is best condition and least hours on it....If they are all pretty much the same condition and i rode mx a bit and pretty open stuff i'd get the ltr450, then the trx450 then the yfz

 

Personally i would NEVER buy a used 450. I can guarantee you that people that have those kinds of quads with that kind of power have beat the **** out of it..get the newest one you can!
