Utility ATV for 10 year old
#1
I want to buy my 10 year old son a utility atv so he can ride with me. I have a Yamaha Grizzly 700. I have been looking at the yout atvs (grizzly 80, grizzly 125, Predator 90, etc.) but I have recently been thinking of going with something larger. Reason being, my wife may want to ride as well and if I get a bigger machine, she can ride and it will last my son longer before he outgrows. But I want to be able to govern the speed.
I would like a 4 x 4 but that is not a must have. I'm really shopping for something used to keep the price down.
What would you suggest?

I have the Breeze 125 (Same as the griz 125) for my 10 year old, I would not want him on anything larger at his skill level. My wife is small (5 foot 2) and she can ride the breeze no problem. It will not go everywhere a 4x4 quad will go, but it does pretty good witha lightweight kid on it.

There is a gap in the 4wd market at the bottom end. If you can go 2wd, the Honda Recon is a superb little machine. My daughter was riding ours at age 10, but she was a big kid for here age.
If you don't need the racks and big fenders, the Honda 250EX is the same machine just in sport plastic and a hefty 50 pounds lighter!
You should be able to find good used prices on either of these.

Here's an idea. If you can afford it, Arctic Cat makes a very nice 90 cc utility quad that looks like their bigger ones. (I am trying to negotiate a deal on one myself, because AC like other mainstream manufacturers is getting killed by competition from much cheaper Chinese quads, so don't expect to pay full MSRP.)
My 9 year-old daughter has the AC DVX50 with the exact same frame but different fenders, and (1) it is very strong (carries me around easliy, at 250+ lbs), and (2) we put big 22" Mudlite rear tires on this weekend and it went through mudholes that gave my Outlander trouble! (The front tires were 19" Duros)
So, with bigger tires for traction and top end, and the additional power of a 90 cc, I think the "Youth 90 2 x 4" (as they call it on ther website) might be for you. Also, like me you could probably find a discounted leftover 2006, since the kids generally like the sporty DVX90 better.
We also have the new Eton Viper 90R four stroke with reverse, which has much better features but would probably not work for you since it does not have the racks that the AC Youth 90 has.
Anyway, there's some ideas, and good luck with your purchase!

Have you looked at the Polaris 2007 sportsman 90cc 4 stroke. It has reverse unlike the AC 90. I think it is a little larger as well. It has front racks and rear racks. As soon as I can sell my sons 2005 eton Viper 50m I am planning to purchase it. Abernathys in TN has them for under $2000 out the door.

But why put a 10 year old child on a 300 cc machine that is so heavy, when a 90 or even a 110 is so much cheaper, will perform nicely in the mud with the right tires, and will last her/him for years?
Keep in mind that almost ALL of the serious ATV accidents and deaths among children are kids on adult ATVs, so why risk it?
