help with buying ATV
#1
I recently got a 2001 Raptor and I'm very dissappointed with it on my 1st trail ride!
It's geared way too high and isn't nearly as comfortable as I was hoping.
I'm now looking into a Polaris Scrambler 4x4, will this be a better choice for slow trail riding, lots of logs and rocks and ruts to climb over? Will the suspension be softer for a comfortable ride?
What is the differance between a 400 and 500 Scrambler?
I see the 400 is a 2 stroke! would it work OK for trails? or better off with a 4 stroke? Will the 400 be ok on slow rough trails?
Help!

I believe the guy was looking for opinions,,,Not smarta$$ remarks.
Rick,,,I have never owned a Raptor or a Scrambler either one, so I cant help much but I'm sure someone will chime in with some good info for you.

I took it on trade for a bill owed me, I wouldn't have bought it. I hear the Raptor is a great trail machine, but not for tight rocky trails which I seem to end up on. I can give up some speed for a slower more capable ride!
Will a Scrambler suit me better?

Dunno bout the scrambler RickCJ7 but start with changing the front sprocket so it will be geared lower. I hear that's pretty popular mod for the raptor 350 and it's cheap to do. Can someone chime in on what size he needs?

smooth ride means independent suspension....also for trails go with a 4 stroke. better on gas. see if you can trade it in on a 4x4 with a winch, both come in very handy. i also like automatic transmission for the trails

Yea... you need a 4x4. If you are finding the big 660 too much in the woods, you are probably not experienced to safely own one anyway. No offense or anything, I'm just getting that vibe.
As far as the Scrammy goes, get the 500. It will be much better for slow trail riding and they are comfortable enough. They are heavy though, and if you do decide to blast wide open trails make sure you have lost of stopping distance.

The Scrambler 500 is a very nice quad. Decent power, soft ride, and has 4x4. They come with nice tires, so you won't need to buy any quick. This sounds like it's more your liken compared to the 660. It also stops fine too.

Hi Rick,Have you checked out the Honda TRX400EX Sport Trax.
I recently purchased a 2005 leftover for a great price.
Very Comfortable to ride on.
This Atv is awesome on the trails, open sandpits, climbing big hills,or just about any type of riding.
I think if you do a lot of Trail riding ,You'd be better off with a 4 stoke ATV than a 2 stroke , only because you'd have to keep the RPM'S up,if not you risk the chance of fouling plugs.
Also a 4 Stroke is much easier to maintain than a 2 stroke..
But Hey,That's Just My Opinion.
Good Luck and Hope You Find The Machine That Fits You.
