z400 has better suspension and a more powerful engine........they both handle well, but with the z400s superior suspension it will handle the tough stuff better..... The z is not too tall, not sure who told you that one. Compared to the EX you sit in a more aggressive riding position, but they both handle great and neither are tall...

In the tight woods the EX will crawl better at low RPMs, on the track the z400 will smoke an EX once the RPMs get up and are allowed to stay there... the z400 is mostly all mid-range and top-end while the EX is mostly low-end.......

Moving up from a 250r???? You will be moving DOWN, unless your r is such a beater that it isn't rideable anymore.........

Both the Z and EX are great machines, with very reliable engines. The frame geometry is virtually identical (the Z is an EX knockoff!). The Z has a faster, but more revy engine.

I like the EX for tight trails. It will lug down throught the tight, technical stuff. I like the Z for more open, faster trails.

If you are going to do motor mods, do them all at once...so you only have to rejet once...
