Honda 400ex , Where to buy
#1
Thanks to for any help.
We have decided on a Honda 400EX for my son. Please don't try and change his mind, he wants and likes the Honda.
I live in Columbus Ohio and can't find any kind of deal on a new one. We will have this thing for a long time so I think new is best for us. I want reverse as well and the newer 400ex are bring way to much money.
Can anyone point me to a good place to buy one that has good prices. I will travel some (500 miles if required).
Thanks again
Russ

Mucka,
Unfortunately I live in Oregon and don't have advise for you on where to buy. I did however just want to say good choice on the Honda. I just purchased 3 new Honda's and we love them. Also have heard nothing but good things about Honda's from all my friends with quads as well as on this forum.
Good luck and have fun on those quads!!!

As for the 400EX...if I could only own one quad that had to do everything, and I had to count on it to get me back home at the end of the day...the EX is the only choice!
If I had to drive 500 miles in my truck hauling my trailer, it wouldn't be worth it for me to do it just to save a few hundred dollars off the purchase price.
I know how folks hate dealers, but I have found good ones and then I have establised long term relationships with them. This works in a positive way for both them and me! Columbus isn't a small town, and there must be several dealerships. If nobody in town is offering you a super deal, it must mean that the market doesn't warrant it!
Dealerships around here can sell every sport quad they get in (not so with utes however), so the only reason they have to offer me a deal is that I am a loyal well established customer who has bought a dozen quads and bikes from them in the last 10 years.......

Believe it or not, ebay is a good place to start, and so is craigslist.
Just make sure you can inspect, and pay and pick up local, and there shouldnt be any scamming to worry about.
After 6 months, the warentee is over, so there really isnt a penalty for buying used. Those quads are so strong, and reliable, that if you buy a used 05 or newer, there really shouldnt be any problems . Make sure the frame doesnt look repaired, or bent, and the motor doesnt smoke on cold start up. Anything else will be reguar repairs, like chains, tires, brakes. Try to find a totally stock, unmodified one...its alot less headaches in the end, for a beginner.
New ones are around 6 large, and Ive personally seen many good 400ex, for well under 2000.
Think about how much you really need reverse. I thought I needed an 05 or newer too, just because of reverse. I ended up getting a very cherry 04, and the price was a bit higher, than most, but its just like new.
I did a craiglist search for columbus, and found at least 8 400ex for sale right now, most are mid $2000, but im sure cash will talk, and make it lower.
Theres not alot of risk, in buying a used 400ex, they have to be among the most well built atv there is.

I'm with recon on this. I'm new to quads but did purchase my Honda's from the local dealership for just that reason. They are good guys and are very helpful. I'm a fan of keeping your business local.

You are in luck...I just purchased a new 2007 400 EX for the low price of $3995 OTD. I do not know the distance this shop is from you but it just may be worth the drive to Chattanooga,TN. www.southernhonda.com Check it out and I hope this helps you.

Thanks to all.
I would very much like to have reverse. That sort of limits the years that I can have. I can't find any kind of deal on a late model.
I did check out the dealer in Chattanooga and they quoted $4013.00 OTD. That is a very good price. My local dealer want $5300.00 plus this plus that plus plus plus.
Thanks again .
If anyone else has finds a deal let me know.

Just an update.
I took the $4013.00 quote to a local dealer and they met the price on the spot. It is an 2007 model but that is what the quote was for. My son got the black one that he wanted. We are looking forward to riding as soon as the weather lets up.
Thanks to all that gave their advice.
