Of all the full-size sport quads, the 400EX is the best tight trail machine. It has low end and an engine that doesn't mind being lugged down. Great handling and dead solid reliable. Descent in the dunes, but it is down on power compared to everything else.
Another great trail quad is the Suzuki Z400. Its engine likes to rev more than the EX and it is faster, so I pick it for faster trails and more open country.

I was in the same predicament. I am about your size and was encouraged by an experienced rider to go with the suzuki 450r. Sat on it, and it didn't fell or look right. tried them all out and just didn't like one thing or another. ended up even considering a Kawi700, but fell inlove with the Kawi450R.
Try the suzuki 450 then hop onto the suzuki 400 and you'll feel the difference. On the 450 you'll sit further away and your arms will feel too stretched out. The 400 will probably feel just right. I went with the kawi 450 because it gave me the fit I wanted (specs pretty close to the suzuki400), with the power I wanted(450 vs 400), EFI, plus reverse(reverse available on the Suzuki400 but not on the 450).
Hope this helps...

I've had more quads than most and one thing for sure the Z 400 is my choice for an all around sport quad. It's got the power to hang right with my 450r but the ride is so much better!. It handles great and the seat is thick enough to ride all day. It's also water cooled where the 400ex is'nt. You cant go wrong with a Z!!!!!!!!!!! I bought this quad for my daughter over a year ago and I ride it all the time and not one problem except...........well it like to Wheelie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say if you can find a nice price on a used Honda 400ex (2005+ if you want reverse) then grab it. If you're going new get the Suzuki z400. I LOVE my 400ex it has the speed for me and I've gone 170mph on my R1, on the track. I love speed@ but on a quad I don't need to have 75 mph top speed to have fun. Good luck
