Default NEWBIE question about buying new ATV

zorro700,
riding 2 up on an atv not designed for it is a just as irresponsible as any other stupid act.
Why advise pete4www to get a 1 up when he wants to take his girlfriend along? she will be cramped and have a bad time! A good 2 up will be comfortable and safe for her!
If you can read I was comparing the X2 to Touring, I said if he plans to ride 1 up mostly the X2 would be better choice than the Touring, if he plans to take her most of the time the Touring would be more comfortable for 2.
Check your panties!

pete4www is looking to buy a new atv, I'm sure a couple hundred extra isn't a big deal to get the right atv the 1st time.

I think that riding double is more uncomfortable than unsafe. You can't move your weight around as well, turn as fast or go up really steep hills. So that's why most people have this thing called common sense. If you're gonna ride double on a 1-person ATV, just ride slower than you normally would and give yourself more room for slowing down and cornering. I really don't see the difference between two 150lb. people riding double and one 300lb. fatty riding solo. The little stickers on the ATVs don't say that you can't ride it if you weigh too much, they only give a maximum payload which is something around 380 lbs. on my Eiger. My girlfriend and I combined aren't even close to that. I've had 6 people on my Eiger when people needed a ride up to my buddy's cabin. So I just drove really slow and carefully for the mile-long trip and there were no problems. Are you telling me that none of you guys out there that condemn riding double have ever ridden in the back of a pick-up truck or had 5 people in a car that only has 4 seatbelts?I understand why you aren't supposed to ride double, but I think it comes down to the same reason that a McDonald's coffee cup has to say "CAUTION: VERY HOT". Because there are too many sue-happy morons out there waiting to do something stupid, hurt themselves, and then place the blame on some one else instead of taking responsibility for their own actions.

Default NEWBIE question about buying new ATV

WTF? We don't need a law to tell us riding 2up is uncomfortable or dangerous. If 2 consenting adults decide to ride doggie style, what skin is off your nose? They've been doing it since the 70's. Of course its more dangerous.... Everybody knows that. Its much harder to steer and the quad reacts unpredictably to bumps n jumps. But, if you don't think you can handle it,,, don't do it! But just because you can't doesn't mean everybody should have to be like you! Just another example of the systematic destruction of liberties in this country by a bunch of sissy thumbsuckers deadset on impossing their will on everybody else because their $%^& isn't long enough.

Pete, I personally hate having to ride with somebody dangling on the back and them yanking me off everytime I hit the gas. If I had to do it all the time I would definitely want a quad that was engineered or reengineered to make the experience as comfortable and safe as possible. If she weighs anything over 100lbs, you'll have a hard time turning and you might as well forget any kind of jumping unless she is a good backseat rider. If she will be coming along for all your riding adventures, get the 2up model or,,, better yet,,, get her a quad just for her... That's what I did.

Riding quads is dangerous
Riding heavy quads is even more dangerous
Riding heavy quads with another person is even more dangerous
Riding heavy quads with another person and the driver being blindfolded is yet more dangerous
Riding quads with an american flag in Iraq is even more dangerous.

Where will you draw the line for me? I need to be told what to do because, obviously, I'm too stupid to decide how to run my own life.

Careful everybody that is admitting that they ride double on a 1 up quad. Your irresponsible, stupid, dangerous,..............let me see hear...........Oh yeah.....your a law breaking criminal. LOL! Give me a break. I love it when people talk about how dangerous different things are on ATV's but, still own ATV's which are inherently dangerous compared to walking. I raced ATV's for 3 yrs and dirt bikes for another 8 (all MX). What seems dangerous to some isn't to others. If your not going to be racing or horsing around then double is fine. The biggest drawback like others have said is more comfort than safety.

Default NEWBIE question about buying new ATV

I hate to ride double,,, I really do. It sux, because they are always pulling me off when I hit the gas and I can't steer very well because of all the weight on the back axle. And being the guy on the back is equally as frustrating because I don't want to "hug" the guy driving and wonder where to put my hands to hang on. And I have to wonder if my feet are inside enough so they dont hit passing trees. And I have to trust the driver can handle the extra weight and dont kill us, lol. But, if I need a ride from A to B or if for some reason I WANT to ride double, I shouldn't have to worry about breaking some goofy law either. People can preach all they want and I'll sit quiet n listen,,,, then go do what I want,,,,, but when they go passing laws is when I get aggrivated. If you feel everyone is ignorant of the dangers and have nothing else to do with your time but try to change the world.... Then start a website, pass out brochures, start a class or seminar,,, do something from the education standpoint and not the legislative arena.

haha, you know you don't have to fly when your riding 2 up. I take my son with me, he's 13. He enjoys riding at a nice pace but nothing too extreme. To me thats the irres. part (riding fast while 2 up). We go down to the river and hang out at the water crossings and what not.

There is a time and place for it all. If I wana haul butt I take the LTR. Cruise, take the Vinny.

It's also dang. to let your child riding on the end of the shopping cart but I let him do that too.

More power to ya Dan! I'm sure you love your boy more than the government,,, and you don't need a law telling you how to raise your kids. If he fell off the end of the shopping cart do you think the state representatives or senators would be at the ER with you? No, they'd be at some MADD mother's house pandering for votes and trying to figure out how to put you in jail,,, and then take your son and give him to a "state approved" family of 15 kids and never tell you where he is again. Default NEWBIE question about buying new ATV

Ok, I have one more question guys. I haven't been able to find an answer to it on the internet anywhere. Lets say I top off the sportsman 500 efi with gas (think it has a 4.1 gallon tank if memory serves me well), and lets say I ride it down a dirt road, not going the fastest it can go, but not too slow either. How many MILES can I go? Lets also pretend the entire road does not have any steep descents or big hills to climb. I am looking for a ball-park estimate. It would be stupid for me to ask EXACTLY how many miles it would get, so if anyone even has a guess, that's good enough for me.

75-80 miles!
The X2 and Touring have 6 gal tanks and can go over 100 miles.
