This thread is a good example!

If you don't tell the kids whats smart and not so smart they can't figure it out themselves. Therefore you need rules to guide them along.</end quote></div>

You ever drive over the speed limit AND KNOW IT? I already know the answer. We all have. Some speed limits are absolutely absurd. So don't come on here with your "I'm smarter than everybody attitude" and pretend like you've never made a conscious decision to break the law it you though nothing was wrong with it.

Another place your silly little comment loses its cleverness that you "THOUGHT" was there, is that you're saying if there is no law against it, it must be safe. Right? Get a clue and learn how to drive.

It's stupid to ride double and with out helmets etc... do what you want but don't cry when DCNR gets you or you get hurt!
I don't think the law should require seatbelts in cars either, thin out the herd.
I don't like rules/laws etc... but without them what would be??????

No... Its just a matter of risk tolerance one is willing to accept. Its stupid to make generalized statements and assume there are never any exceptions. IE. "Everyone with tattoos and black t-shirts are criminals." "All lower income blacks are crackheads." "Any guy with longhair must know where to get drugs."

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: RickCJ7

I don't think its illegal in my area (if it is, nobody pays any attention to it). You sound like you'd be disappointed if someone DIDN'T get hurt so you can say, "See? I told you so." That's what your statement sounds like to me anyway.

I agree. So does everybody in New Hampshire. The same place that has less gun laws than any other state, yet has lower crime (according to the FBI).

I like rules and laws that have an intelligent purpose. I don't want to live in a lawless mad max atmosphere. But I don't agree with helmet and seatbelt laws. That's just fascism.

And taking that risk is smart?

"Smart" has nothing to do with it. We don't legislate intelligence! If so, half the population would be in prison, lol.

What if the smartest guy in the world chooses to ride w/o a helmet? Is it smart? Is it stupid? Is it any of our business???

But if you insist,,,,, If one carefully calculates the risk and does so from an educated standpoint and has adequate experience... Yes, I would say that is smart. Concersely, if one has no experience and doesn't make any risk assessment before making a decision... That doesn't sound too smart to me. But either way, what business is it of ours?

Risk assessment is something we have to do all the time. IE. "Is the coffee cool enough to take a drink?" "Is it safe to pull out of my driveway or is that car that is coming going to fast for me to not get hit?" "Should I put my money in stocks, bonds, under the mattress?" Managing risk is something every living creature gets to do on its own.

Concersely = Conversely.... Anyway...

Riding atv's is risky even with all the protective gear. Is it smart to take the risk?

You may "manage the risks" on your own but if something happens to you, you hurt us all. If you were to get in an accident on your wheeler and get killed then the more restriction we get and more regulations and the more leverage they have. You sometimes have to think of more than just yourself. I agree it is up to you and your life but you are hurting more than just yourself.

Riding double I think is a little different as long as you are responsible with it. But if you are stupid about it than don't do it.

Exactly! When some gets hurt or crippled we all pay! But I shouldn't care where my taxes go!

Less risky with all the protective gear..correct?

Probably not but it sure is fun!

I have always been a "dress for the crash, not the ride". kinda guy since a very bad crash I had in my early 20's. At 47 I wouldnt even consider getting on my KTM without gear. That risk isnt worth it to me.

Not true! If I get killed on a quad, how will your life change? What? They gonna make you wear a helmet? LOL, don't you already? They're not going to outlaw quads,,, they bring in too much money. Just like they can't outlaw cars or motorcycles. The root problem is people trying to imposse their will on others in the name of safety.

Who is "they" that you mentioned? The same group that thinks its stupid to ride w/o a helmet? Aren't "they" arguing with me now? If "they" are, then just tell "them" not to use my death as leverage to do whatever it is they are trying to do. Its an attitude shift the population needs. Live n let live and vote down goofy laws that restrict our sport. And instead, start an atv school where you can educate people if you feel so strongly about "public safety". Take up donations from others that feel the same to finance the school.

Seems this thread has gotten some momentum, but I'll be gone for a little while, have to run into town without my seatbelt, LOL. I'll be back later.... But if I get into an accident and die, maybe they won't put too many restrictions on your car driving experience.
