Default NEWBIE question about buying new ATV

Under those conditions my 376cc Eiger gets around 30 MPG - probably a few more considering a flat road (which never happens). Your 500 could get 25 MPG on a flat road, but that's never going to happen. That 75 to 80 miles would be good safe figure.

I have watched the video of your 400...and I am intrigued. Is a vehicle like that allowed at Hatfield-McCoy? Is it suitable for mountain trail riding?

Do you want an atv or a dune buggy?

I had originally entertained the idea of a dune buggy. The problem being finding suitable places to ride.

Default NEWBIE question about buying new ATV

I was once a do gooder, who thought you should always ride single on an atv. Now I find myself seriously considering a permenantly attached hard back storage seat. You can actually buy the footpegs for a second rider as well.

Apparrantly in Canada, they do not consider it illegal or even immoral as some here would suggest. It tends to be a fairly common practice. There is an article posted on another site that breaks down the reasons for the law...and basically debates it point by point. ie allowable cargo weight, balance issues blah blah blah.

When I rationally look at all of the dangerous things that I have done, parachuting, surfing off of the coral reef, jet boating in class five rapids on the Niagra river, motorcycles, dunebuggies, canoeing, jumping from cliffs into the resevoir, riding in the back of a pick up etc...

Riding my daughter two up down to the community pool does not seem to rate very high on that list.

We will still have our helmuts on...I am not that stupid :-)

i ride 2 up all the time on my sport quad. the only thing i dont like is i cant get real nutty with my girlfriend onboard.
Other wise if you drive a little slower, lean a little more, it is perfectly alright. I only get hurt when riding by myself, never been hurt riding double.

A buddy of mine flipped backwards with his girlfriend on the back trying to climb a ditch. She was pinned and had to go to the hospital. Neither one of them think it should be illegal. You can get hurt doing anything,,, should everything be illegal? Nobody I know wears a helmet either. We rarely see anyone with a helmet when we go riding (usually just the dirtbike guys wear helmets). Maybe 1 or 2 guys out of 20 or 30 quads. I assume everybody knows the risks... That's good enough for me anyway. Live n let live. "Get the beam out of your own eye before you try to pluck the splinter from your brother's eye." Meaning = you have too much to worry about in your own life to come tell me how to live mine. "Let he that is without sin cast the first stone." Meaning = once your life is perfect and you live to, say, 101 yrs old and still ride quads, then come talk to me about my life. I'll be all ears! In the mean time..... talk to the hand!

I was a roofer for 10yrs. Everyday, death or serious injury was nothing more than a misstep or slip away. What's the difference if I walk across the roof knowing if I slip,,, that's it,,, I'm done..... and riding in a trail and knowing if I flip,,, that's it,,, I'm done????? I could have worn a lanyard on the roof, but never did, they get in the way and I'd probably tripped over it. I could wear a helmet, but it gets in the way and I'd probably crash. Not to mention have neck injury from all the extra weight on my head.

Just like I did for 10yrs in roofing.... know your capabilities, pay attention to what you're doing, don't take silly risks,,,, and for God's sake,,, don't fall/crash! IF you're a klutz, you don't need to be on a roof, and you probably don't need to be on a quad even with full body protection!

This thread is a good example!
If you don't tell the kids whats smart and not so smart they can't figure it out themselves. Therefore you need rules to guide them along.

Rules from parents, absolutely. Not laws from politicians!
