Used Sport Quad
#1
I'm interested in getting a used 4x4 sport quad. What machines should I be looking for and at? It's hard to tell a lot of times if they are 4x4 or not.
Let me know what I might want to keep my eye out for.
Thanks!

First off, I think the term you are looking of is "sport/ute"....which for the most part is complete marketing hype....they are all more ute than sport! These days you can get a 350 pound sport quad, yet the big utilities start out at 600+ pounds...nothing very "sporty" about that!!!
There are a few utes that try to be "hybrids" between a ute and sport quad....the Yamaha Wolverine is a good example. Nice idea, but nobody has really realized the full potential of the idea. Are you actually looking for a hybrid, or just another utility???
There are indeed a few utilities that are 2wd. The way you tell if they are 4X4 is to look at the front end and see if it has a differential up there.

Not all 4x4s have a front differential. Some just have a gearbox. No differential = no limited slip 3-wheel drive. You just have to look for the 4x4 sticker. The Scrambler is a 571 pound 4x4 sport-tractor. They're fun to ride and the 4x4 on them is better than the Visco-Lok on a Renegade. You can put racks on the front and rear of the Scrambler for utility, but I've never even seen a picture of a Renegade with racks. I don't know if they make any but, no racks, no utility, IMO. I don't know if you can get a trailer hitch for it either, but you can for a Scrambler. You can plow snow with them too. That's the closest thing to a sport-utility I've ever seen. I do know the Renegade is sporty, but maybe not a sport-utility, and I don't think you can find a deal on used ones anyway. There are true sport quads available from every manufacturer if you just want a sport quad. There are tons of used ones out there. The only one I ever rode was a Blaster and it was way too small for me.

I think it's a brilliant class, the 4x4 sport hybrid. I owned a Scrambler 500 for all of a week. It was kinda beat so I had issues with it and got rid of it- but that was the poor maintenaince done on it- I don't think the machine itself was at fault.....
But when it did run the thing was nothing short of perfect for 99% of the trails in Colorado. Short of the serious rock crawling I do with my Arctic Cat 700, or deep mud bogging, I think the Scrambler would be awesome. Almost to the point I wish I had kept it and just fixed the thing- but I got a shiny new big bore Cat, so I don't complain.
From the more open desert area here to the sandy trails running strait up the side of a mountain, I find myself doing on a huge big bore utility what I could be doing on a Scrambler. I rarely need LO range except on rock crawls. I never use my front locker. So mostly that's dead weight on a full on utility for me. I tend to be in 4HI most of the day, and able to maintain higher speeds. Perfect for a 4x4 sport quad.
I also was amazed to see tons of Scramblers on the trails this weekend. I never knew they were so popular. But I saw lots of them in the same places I was taking a full ute with all the goodies. Even saw Scramblers with racks and boxes on them!
When I can finally afford a machine for my wife I would seriously consider getting her the Scrambler or Renegade. She won't be doing the hardcore rock climbs I like, or towing our kid out of a hole, so she can have something lighter- and something I can rip around on too!!!!!
