I am looking to get a the smallest 4x4 utility quad sold for my 5 year old nephew. It doesnt matter what brand. I'll even consider a chinese brand. I would prefer it be an automatic transmission or cvt but may consider a semi auto.
I know there is the 2007 Hawkeye/2008 Sportsman 300.
edit: we ride in mud.

You're not going to find anything that even comes close to fitting a five year old in 4wd - nor will you need it.
With a lightweight kids quad and a lightweight rider, the weak point for trailriding is not the lack of 4wd. With watching three sons grow up with riding trails over the past ten + years it's been my experience that the main thing that stops a kids quad is low ground clearence. Second problem with kids quads are drum brake failuresafter getting wet. After that would be suspension and then 'maybe' lack of 4wd. After thousands of miles of riding, the only time our kids quads got stuck was when they got high centered - something that will stop a 4wd as well. We've had many rides where the smaller, lighter and narrower kids quads made it through areas that stopped full sized 4wd's in their tracks.
Add to that the extra weight of a 4wd and you'll be getting a quad that is more of a danger for a kid to ride than a ligheweight 2wd kids quad. My opinion as a rider and as a parent - There are no trails out there that require both 4wd and a five year old driver.

Here's a few questions to think about,
1. Can the 5 year old reach the handle bars, controls, and foot pegs with no problem?
2. Is the five year old stong enough to control a 4x4 ATV?
3. Is 300cc too much for a 5 year old?
Most likely, your child is not tall enough to reach everything without bending over or streching out all the way. And I know a five year old is not strong enough to control a 4x4 ATV because my 6 year old cousin who is a strong kid for his age has trouble steering my Suzuki Ozark 250 which is only 2x4. 300cc is a bit much for a young kid too. As I said, I own a 250cc utility quad and that has more than enough power to pull me through 70 feet of pure suctiony muck, and I'm 14 years old.
I get through any and all mud with my Interco Swamp Lites on the back of my Ozark.

We have a yamaha grizzley 80 that my 5 year old son rides. We have the govenor set at about 6 mph and it's about perfect for him. Anything bigger would be way more that he could control. My son is actually still 4 until the 19th of this month, he's 4' tall and weighs 50 lbs and this machine is all he could handle....
