Default Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 IRS vs Honda FourTrax Rancher 4x4 vs Arctic Cat 500 4x4

Well the name of this thread is starting to become moot.

I think I am going to throw my stubborness of the ATV needed to be a 5-speed manual out the door and start to look at Autos because the 5-speed manual is very limiting.

Later this week I am going to take a ride over to my local Polaris dealer and check out the Sportsman 500 H.O. ...........any comments on this ATV?

Drum brakes are actually 1900s technology. They started putting them on cars in 1901. When's the last time anyone built a car with them? That's one of just a few reasons I'll never buy a Honda.</end quote></div>

I agree with you completely that discs are superior to drums on an ATV, but they still do make cars with drum brakes(or at least they did within the last 2 years). In fact, they still use drums on big trucks because of their superior resistance to over-heating. That Tractor-trailer riding your *** on the highway has drum brakes.

I didn't know they still had drum brakes on passenger cars because I never drive them. That really surprises me. The discs brakes seem to stop cars and pickups a lot quicker. I've had 4-wheel disc brakes on my pickups for over a decade and think I had front disc/rear drums before that. I'm not sure but I think the last thing I drove with all drums was a 6x6 dually in the army over 20 years ago. It was 10 wheel drive and I still got it stuck once. I've seen drums on big rigs but didn't know why they use them.

Well after a lot of shopping around and some good advice I am a proud owner of a new 2008 Brute Force 750i (Camo) w/ winch. I got the dealer down to $6650 and I could not pass it up. I pick it up on Monday.

Thoughts/Comments?

It certainly meets the minmum 400cc requirement.
I'm wondering what the heck happened to you needing a 5-speed manual foot-shifter?
Selectable 2 and 4 wheel-drive, so you got 2 out of 3 things you wanted.
Give us a ride report when you can.

Well I found out (as most of you already knew) that I was greatly crippling my selection options by wanting a 5-Speed Manual Foot-Shifter. And like I said, I could not pass up that price

So just like Meatloaf said, "2 outta 3 ain't bad"

I will be sure and post back a ride report.
