For cross country work or desert, I would pick the Honda.

If you ride the track, then the Yamaha (new YFZ450R if possible!).

Neither is a great trail quad. The 450's like to rev, and make their power way up in the rpm range. So, on a slow trail, you have to do a lot of clutch slipping that gets old real real fast.

If you are a trail rider, consider a 400 instead. If you trail ride and must have a 450, then go with the Honda. The Yamaha is srpung stiff, and out in the rough stuff, it isn't very comfortable.

Another 450 to look at would be the KFX450 not my choice in a quad but if you are looking for more of a all terrain quad this might be more your ticket as they also have reverse!

I'll toss in my 2-cents as a guy who has only ridden both a few times and own neither........ so I have no bias.....

I really like both machines. The Yamaha is a little quicker stock, more pull going through the gears. But the Honda has more top speed, has longer gears and provides smooth power. The YFZ has more of a hit, while the Honda revs and pulls more smooth.....

They both handle very good, nothing jittery about either but I would say the Yamaha feels lighter at higher speeds....

For me the Honda was slightly more comfortable, but I think that is because it feels more like my Suzuki that I'm so used to. The YFZ feels like the front end is low, and you feel a bit tall in the seat. And you are reaching down more when you stand up, but that could be fixed by adjusting the bars probably, moving them forward a bit...... my buddy has a 2" riser on his and that made a huge difference for standing up.....

I also rode a 450R with the HRC kit, and 1.5" spacers and wow what a difference...... the thing is an absolute beast in the low end and never stops pulling and it handles even better.......highly impressive......

I figured I'd toss in my opinion - even though if I had to choose I cannot say for sure which I'd choose...... they are both so good it is a tough choice and neither one is probably wrong......

Please explain!

Mine is set up so perfect that I can bash huge deset whoops at full speed. I leave everybody in the dust, because they are bucking all over the place and I am just dancing along on top. It will go faster than I ever care to go (HRC equiped)!!!
