Default ATV Insurance

Okay, might be a dumb question, but I really don't know. Do you need to have separate insurance on an ATV or are they covered under your home insurance?

I have two ATVs at my cabin - they do not get much use - under 100 hours each per year. If the ATV(s) got wrecked or stolen, or God forbid, someone got injured on one, will home insurance cover the bill? We have family members and friends that use the cabin and ATVs - if they get hurt, will insurance cover them as well?

Thanks.

Your homeowners insurance MAY cover them if:

1. They are in a locked enclosure on your property and are stolen
2. If they are in the garage and the whole house burns down
3. IF you have a separate rider listing the ATV's

Your best bet is separate insurance for each ATV. Full coverage on mine runs from $50 to $125 per year depending on the bike.

Homeowners may cover theft or damage while the ATV's are stored (you may want to check your policy), but it is very unlikely that it will cover any liability, damage, collision, or injuries while the ATV's are in use. ATV insurance is fairly inexpensive. I pay less than $75 per year for the peace of mind of having coverage while I'm out riding.

As an insurance agent it is always better to have a seperate policy. If you did manage to get coverage under your home policy, I don't think you would want a surcharge added to your home insurance if you have a claim. The cost for an ATV policy with full coverage is usually under $200 a year. I know last year I had a wire rubbing on the frame and it burned the main wiring harness and into the headlight pod. The cost of the repair was over $1400. My out-of-pocket deductible was $250 and there is no surcharge applied to ATV's. (at least with American Family Insurance). Money well spent on a seperate policy.

Progressive costs about $120 a year and they covered thefts from my driveway.
