Reverse is nice but, I wouldn't let it decide what I buy. There are times I wish I had it but, it's few and far between. Really depends on where you ride. If you making your own trials in thick woods than you'll probably need it more. If riding established trails or open areas than probably won't need it.

I'd be checking the Craigslist in your area for both a 400ex and a z/kfx/dvx400.

I agree with Koopa. Don't let whether or not the quad has reverse make your decision. I have a 04' 400EX. The only time I regret not having reverse is getting it off my trailer. Find a good quad first.

You say you ride "trails", but that doesn't tell us much. Can you be more specific?

How tall and heavy are you? If I were on the small side, I would be tearing around on a Yamah Raptor 250 or a Blaster. If a little bigger, maybe a Honda 300EX or 250EX. Or if you are larger or want something you can grow into, then the 400 class is a good place to start.

Like has been said, reverse is nice but usually not a necessity.....
