Quad for an experienced 9 year old
#1
My son has been riding a Chinese 90 for 2 years. He's recently ridden my fourtrax 300 and done okay. I want to get him a used but newer ATV and debate how big to buy. I live in Illinois but sometimes ride in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin a child under 12 is supposed to be on a 90cc or less machine. But I think any kids ATV would be acceptable. I usually ride in Illinois so that is not an issue there. I'm looking at machines between a Polaris Outlaw 90 and as large as a Arctic Cat 150. It would be nice to stay on a 90 because it fits the letter of the Wisconsin law. But I'm afraid he would outgrow it too soon. How long did you or your kids ride a smaller cc atv? I'd like it to last him 3-4 years so we could then trade it toward something like my 300 4x4 when he is 12-13.

That's a common problem. To me it just doesn't make sense to buy a quad that's too small or will be outgrown in no time but the law is the law. You can do what's legal or you can do what makes sense. Happy riding.

When my son was younger, we didn't have strict laws on age. His first was a honda 125 at about 9 and when he was 11 I got him a yamaha blaster. They both fit him well and he was never struggling to control them. If you go with the 90 and I understand why, understand that he may outgrow it experience wise, but it will still get him around just fine. I rode dirt bikes all my life and got my first atv when I was 14 and it was a suzuki 125 and it was fine for me, not that I couldn't have gone bigger, but I was able to ride it without bogging out. Good luck.
