Default NEED HELP Buying used atv for $6000 here's my choices:

This is my first thread/post and I'm about to buy my first atv so I will be here for a long time.

I recently bought a cottage and I'm looking to have a little toy that I can take my little ones (6) for small ride down the trails, plow the lake to make a rink, and do odd jobs around the cottage. I honestly don't expect to put 500km on it in a year but who knows. I have a CRF250R that I like to ride but the wife wants a quad and I think it would be fun too.

My budget is firm at $6,000 and I have been looking for a couple months and missed out on a couple deals (buyer changed mind or someone beat me to it)

Here's what my current options are:

1) $6000 - 2007 Honda Rubicon 2,400km mint shape (winch, GPS, 2nd passenger seat)

2) $5400 - 2007 CanAm Outlander 716km 400 HO 2UP (winch)

3) $5800 - 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO 75km (practically new, now extras)

4) $5000 - 2007 Yamaha Kodiak 450 1,300km (winch)

5) $5800 - 2009 Yamaha Grizzly 450 377km (winch/plow) 377hrs - used to plow a car lot

There's a lot of options in the 2500+ km range but I prefer to stay below 2000 although I know the rubicon is well taken care of so that has the exception.

What's your 1st 2nd 3rd choice?
Is there a clear winner here?

Thank you very much for your help.

I'd find a nice good used big bore such as a sportsman700-800,Brute force 650-750 Honda rincon 650-680 and king quad or grizzly 700.I believe the twns have the most power, that would be the kawasakis and polaris's.I would think any used atv thats been properly cared for would be a good deal for the right price.Dont buy new because you wll just get washed and hosed on the top end of it.

Very interesting.

Here's another question...

How many km's (miles) is too much?

polaris seems to do better with higher mileage than can-am. maybe just because people with can-am's ride them hard & fast.

I typically won't buy any 4x4 atv with over 1500 miles on it- if it's a can-am, I like to see the mileage below 500-

I actually don't have a problem buying new- it's worth a couple extra thousand to get a machine with no issues & a warranty- I bought my current outlander 800max new and I didn't regret it at all.
I don't trust anyone when buying a used atv- everyone says they kept up with the maintenance, even when they didn't.
the first few hours of breaking in an atv is the most critical.

The Honda with the weakest 30hp OHC motor and no AWD,rear drum brake , a straight axle and is a 2007 with the highest milage is the most exspensive?

My choice there for bang for buck would be the 2007 Grizzly (Called Kodiak then).

I always buy used and never bought a bad one yet. With the money I saved I could get a shop to rebiuld the entire motor and still save big vs new.
Warranties in Canada are only 6 months long so there almost useless anyways.

Your highest mileage machine is only 2,400 Km (1,400 miles) thats like 14 fill ups.
If that is considered high mileage people on this site would need to trade in every year.

Remember everyone here rides a used ATV, there considered used once you sign the dotted line let alone get it home.

Somthing fishy there. I have that many hours on my 500 and it has 6100km. That is a average of 10mph.

377km =226miles. That averages to 1.6 mph with 377hrs. That seems slow even for plowing. Maybe it did alot of idling?

With those prices and using Kilometer talk,I take it you from Canada also?

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Yes I'm from Canada and the prices are a bit more expensive. Like I said, $6K is my budget and I don't want to spend and extra couple thousand to buy new.

The grizz is very fishy with the high hours and although the specs are great the idling concerns me.

The other thing I have to consider is the cost for a winch/plow/2up seat. So as much as I like that 500HO that's almost brand new, I'm looking at another $1000 for the add on's that I want.

More then a bit higher here in Canada, but so are the resell prices so it all works out. Reselling a ATV I bought used is not nearly the same hit the person takes when he sells a ATV he bought new.

You can always buy those options like winches and plows and passenger seat used.

When I bought my 350 Grizzly last summer it had one of those passenger seats, there not my thing because I need the rear rack space, so I sold it for $100 Canadian.
