i bought my first ATV last year, it was a 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO and i havent had any problems with it. not sure if i would get a big bore tho? unless youre not gonna be trail riding... i mean thats a little excessive. i almost got an 850 but im glad i decided to stick with the 500 HO!
also, IMO on the yamahas, the handle bar feels as if it is sitting at an awkward angle. i asked one of the salesman at the yamaha shop about it and he said he thought it was for when you were in mud or whatever and had to stand up, he said they made it to where you could have maxium comfort while standing. i disagree with his reasoning personally. i would definitely recommend the polaris tho! im going places where my friends cannot go! and they have grizzlys and foremans!

haha touche, but when you go riding with people that own those and are extremely cocky about them... its always nice to prove yourself the victor

buying a big bore isn't so much about speed as it is about having instant power.
I almost never get my outty 800 over 40 mph- and the new-england trails are about as tight and rough as you can get-
I enjoy being able to blip the throttle and instantly lift the front end over obstacles, or wheeling over a small berm in a tight trail and catching some air, or whipping around a corner with a small blip of the throttle, or having tire shredding torque in deep sticky mud-
not saying you can't have any fun on a mid sized atv (400-600cc) but in my experience- the only people who ever say you don't need a big bore, are the ones who've never spent much time in a trail on a big bore
I've owned them all- all sizes, and I've never thought to myself ... "gee, wish I had stayed with that mid bore"
