300ex vs. Scrambler 400 2x4
#1
Hi. My name is Alex and I'm 14 5'3 and 100lbs. I'm looking to buy either a new 300ex, polaris scrambler 400 2x4 or mabey 4x4 if you would suggest that (how much is it), or any other quad in that range. I have ridden my friends 300ex and i loved it. Due to my age i cant test any other quad at the dealer. Im used to shifting with an auto clutch because of my recon but when i rode the 300ex i liked using a clutch. Will i get bored with the scramblers automatic. I will be mainly just riding around my land, some trail riding, a little dune riding and mabey some jumping here an there. I will greatly accept any suggestions. Thanks!!!!!!!!

well the scambler will eat the 300 alive. and with mods will beat a 400ex. but for what you need either one will do well. the 300 will be a little easier to do the maintence on. but the scrambler will go faster and react better to the mods. but go with the one you feel most comfertable on.

We just got a 300ex - my son is almost your exact age and size. So far it has been great. Given his weight, he kicks butt on the 300ex. It is a perfect size for him to control it with precision. At the dunes (Little Sahara, Utah) a couple of weeks ago he set up a course over about a dozen dunes for us to race. I was on a new stock raptor and of course would pass him at will on the straights - but he would make it up on the tight winding turns and could fly the jumps just as good. If I had worked twice as hard as him I probably could have won.
The Scram 400s that I have riden are good, but they are much much bigger and heavier. There is no way they can be ridden as aggressive and thrown around by someone your age. If you were to get stuck you would probalby need help to lift it out. My son can lift either end of the 300ex. What works for you will also depend on where and how you will ride. If it is tight stuff, the 300ex is much better. If it is open desert, fireroads, etc. maybe the scram 400.
Good luck

kuker - the question is from a 14 yr old rider - you're right, the scrambler is a beast - which means it not the best for all situations. On tight trails it is annoying. For playing around - wheeling, vacant lot mx tracks, etc. - the 300ex is a great choice for the money and a perfect lead into bigger sport machines. A used 300ex for under $3K is a reliable option for a kids first machine. I stand by my reply to this thread.
