I will be buying an ATV primarily for hunting and am considering the 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500. I'm looking for comments and opinions from current owners as to performance, maintenance and dependability. Thanks.

I myself was looking at a Sportsman. Decided it was too big a quad for me. Did not feel comfortable on it. Heard stories that 500's can tire you out by day's end.
I myself chose a Honda Rancher. 170 less cc's, but also 170 pounds lighter. Less power, but more nimble.
Your question is on the 500. All I can say is check out all the forums listed,(Polaris, Yamaha, Honda, ect.) Look for any problem posts, as well as praises. But most important, get on test ride some different quads at you local dealer. Get a feel. Look at cost. And best of luck!

Peeps yes it takes a little more time to do regular mainteance but to to me it is worth. As for hunting my SP500 is not as loud as my brothers 00Kodiak which is also a very good machine. As far as ride goes the Sportsman is second to none. But go test drive all the different makes and decide for youself what bike is best for you.

As far as being tired at the end of the trail riding day on a Sportsman?Only one word to describe that?''TOTAL HOGWASH''.The Sportsman is one of the best casual trail riding [maybe even the best]of all quads.===BILL

Why can't the moderator do something about this jerk it is one thing to get on here and have some friendly arguements as I have done in the past. But this idiot always has something stupid to stay without no facts to back it up. Anyway the sportsman is a big bike but you have to let it drive itself if that makes sense I must admit after riding long rides on the AC and the sportsman, the sportsman makes me feel better at the end of the day, and I am over 40...yes I know, I am no spring chicken so that should tell you something but I do like both bikes...
