Like all screens if the sun is right it can be tough to see. I usually just come to a stop anyhow when I'm trying to reconoiter. If it's bad I just cup my hand over the screen to make sure I'm on the right track. I usually check at intersections in the trail and it hasn't been too bad of a problem.

May want to look at the Garmin Dakota 20 - touch screen, small footprint and holds a lot of the same maps/info as the upper level models.
