CBD wants to close down Sand Mountain - all of it!
#11
I am dropping some t-shirts and fliers off for Jeff tonight for him to bring to the mountain. Got Sand has once again stepped up to help us. They are going to sell FoSM t-shirts and hand out fliers about the proposed closure.
Glad I could help...
Anybody wanting to help(or spread the word) should stop by the Got Sand vender and pick up a flier, also don't forget to buy a couple of FoSM shirts
Thanks
Jeff

We rest on our laurels while they are chipping away at our lands bit by bit. They get a little....wait a while....take a little more...eventually everything will be shut down!

I have had several conversations with Jerry Seaver (president of the ASA), and he has been very good source of advice. I have not asked them for any financial assistance yet.

Well, how was it out there?
Did any of you see the "Rumor Control" fliers that BLM is putting up? Nice, huh?
"We are not closing Sand Mountain because of a Butterfly"
But they say nothing about their own plant ecologist wanting to close down 1000 acres or the fact that a subgroup has been formed that will give a recommendation regarding the closure by August 1. What is their agenda?
What did some of you see from the BLM this weekend? Feel free to email me if you don't want to post it here -> crowley9@pacbell.net

Jon, the BLM were out in force this weekend with the glamis trailer and rail up there like last memorial. There were very few accidents that i saw and only 1 lifeflite. When picking up a season pass i asked the blm person y are you trying to shut down 1/4 of SM. They said they arent and it has nothing to do with them and gave me one of those rumor sheets. What are we supposed to do

Here is a quote from the Lahontan Valley News:
BLM spokesman Mark Struble:"the bureau is so far standing behind a temporary ban of off-road-vehicles on 1,000 acres along the mountain's north and northwest portions."
They are getting some heat and they don't like it so they will spread half-truths to cover their asses. Lot's of politics flying.
Just wait, CBD's next move will be to file a petition to list the Sand Mountain Blue just like they did with the Andrew's Scarab beetle in Glamis:

Make sure to check on the FoSM website on Saturday AM. I will post info in regards to the first subgroup meeting that is being held this Friday.

Letter to the Editor - RGJ on 5/28/03
Cultivate buckwheat for butterfly habitat
In response to your article, “Environmentalists want to bar vehicles from part of Sand Mountain”:
Fact: The Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly must have Kearney Buckwheat to survive.
Fact: Other species of blue butterflies also use Kearney Buckwheat.
Fact: There are over 60 known locations of Kearney Buckwheat in the Great Basin region.
Fact: Different species of blue butterflies (specifically the genus Euphilotes) can only be identified by examining their genitalia, so casual identification is not possible.
Fact: According U.S. Fish & Wildlife, there have only been “incidental surveys” at a few of these known locations for Kearney Buckwheat.
Conclusion: We have no idea if Sand Mountain is the only place that the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly exists, but BLM wants to close down the known habitat because it “feels right.”
Environmental groups and the BLM should focus their effort on learning how to grow Kearny Buckwheat so habitat can be propagated if necessary. Instead they are only concerned with managing public land by drawing a red circle around an area and closing it off.
Users at Sand Mountain already pay federal taxes to support BLM, and now have to pay fees to use Sand Mountain. What do we get in return?
