Carb Questions
#1
Ok, I have a couple questions about my stock carb on my '01. First, is that screw facing the left side atached to the black cable the air/fuel mixture? If so when I turn it clockwise and rev the bike the rpms hang high for a second then come back down, then when I turn it counter clockwise it bogs so that must be leaning and richining it. Is it safe to say that I should have it as lean as I can with out haveing the rpms hang at all. The reason I ask is because I have always had to give it some gas while starting it and I feel I shouldnt. I have no idea what altitude I am here so where can I check and about how many turns out should I be at stock? I believe it is around three but just wanted to check. Also what the hell is that black thing in the throat of the carb that is vacume operated? I have been messign with carbs on cars all my life and never seen such a thing and figured it would be a major restriction. thanks for all input in advance.

that screw with the black cable is the idle screw. The mixture screw is on the bottom of the carb in front of the bowl. I am pretty sure that the stock bikes come with 2 turns out on the mixture screw. Out richens and tightening leans it.

Sounds like you need a manual Crazy is right, you have been playing with the idle adjustment, the stock carb is really pretty simple, but it's not 4-barrow carb. You must have already pulled the thing apart to find the diagram and slide. Your needle valve is controlled by the vaccum, if your not sure what to do with this stuff, click on the seach box and type in "carb", or "jetting", or ???, you will find many others have been through this with links to some real helpful sights. There is a listing that's I've found helpful telling how others have set up their bikes jetting, exshaust, gearing, ect.
Be careful with that carb if you don't feel comfortable, and don't loose any parts or you will just be looking and not riding. and end up paying someone to fix it..

First of all, WHy cant you BLOW up the size of your AV, I keep straining to look!! LOL.
OK, the Black thing is a slide that is vacumm operated for the sole purpose of lifting the needle in and out of the mainjet, Thus giving you MID-RANGE.
You will save alot of time talking to people like Buttfungus, and MR. horsepower. Guys like this have really tuned the Stock carbs to perfection, and could tell you exactly what to do if you can provide them with some general info.(elevation, and the symptoms you are having now).
