Default Best dunes?

1bigdsrider, I told you this could be debated.......LOL

It seems most people like what they like and everyone has different tastes. Thank god for the good ole United States.

I have ridden st. anthony, little sahara utah, dumont, glamis, killpecker dune (rock springs wyoming), coral pink dunes and hope to make it to some others.

I would say that glamis is great for the vastness (if that is a word) of the dunes. St. anthony for some of the scariest stuff. It is steep up there. But, I favor utah because there is nice camping, with picnic tables and desert trees, paved roads and if you need them running water bathrooms. Many areas to camp in and a lot of dunes to ride. Also, one of the biggest hills for racing on.

Coral pink was great for family camping and enjoying the rides. Nothing that really impressed me dune wise, except the color. But it was a great time and I hope to go back later this year.

Anyway, it depends on what you want. I would say for the mecca of duning you need to go to glamis. But it does get kind of trashy and of course busy on the weekends. I had never seen piles of toilet paper and human waste in piles in the desert before I went to glamis, so watch where you ride. LOL

Glamis is pretty big and has a lot of diversity, as well.
I remember last year (first time there) riding from Gecko Road to the wall (down the sand highway at the edge of the dunes) and just that straight shot was 13 miles!
I'd hate to get lost out, break down or run out of gas out there!
Anyone know how many square miles or acres Glamis is?

Default Best dunes?

Hey Jetjock you still didn't answer my question!? I will tell you why St> A's is better than most of those dunes in detail.

PIZMO: Pizmo is ok. It is nice in the summer because it is on the ocean and it is cool. There are absoulutley no Hillshooting dunes there! (Major draw back) It is also like playing in you kids sandbox(Small). You are constantly stepping over people and the sand is always chopped up. If you don't have aftermarket shocks your kidney's will have to be replaced! Salt water wreaks Havoc on your equipment, and it is easy to get your rig stuck there.

GLAMIS: Glamis is pretty nice. It is huge and diverse. And it will be even more fun when they open the rest of it back up. Drawbacks are DUST!!!!, ANd the largest consentration of IDIOTS!!! I have ever encountered. The camping sucks! And the sand is really hard to read. Comp hill and Olds hill Suck because there are way to many whoops in them!

Dumont: I like Dumont because of course it is close to me when I am home in L.A. The comp hill there is really nice not to many whoops and steep. The dunes are easier to transition. The are some Major Razorbacks there though(Not good). MAJOR DRAWBACKS, WIND, and DUST!!!!!!!!! The sand is a little difficult to read also but better than glamis. The sand cositency here is also interesting. It provides for better traction and isn't as soft. Knobbies work really well here, ask Raptor03 about that. Camping is ok.

Little Sahara, Utah: I have some really mixed feelings about this place. Good points are: Camping and Diverse ridding conditions. Bad points: Comp hill here is AWESOME it is long and steep, maybe a bit to long. And the whoops at the bottom compare almost to Oldmobile. The transitions are a little rough. You come down off a bowl and you usually land out pretty hard at the bottom. You really have to work your bike here to pick smooth lines when you are duning. Short riding season is also a negative here. You can ride up till maybe July and then it is to damn HOT!! Come back in September until November. Oh yeah, terrible read on the sand, hared to make out what is in front of you, and of coarse DUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SAND MOUNTAIN: In a couple of words: Small and Dangerous!! They have the worst Razorbacks I have ever seen! Camping sucks. Very little fun duning here, sand consitency is ok but difficult to read. But the best part is the Gravity Bowl!! That is the funnest bowl I have ever played in next to Tea Cup at St. A's. The comp hill there is pretty nice also. All in all Sand mtn is my least favorite place. Location is the main reason. But Pizmo is the worst of all.

ST. ANTHONY: AWESOME in a word!!!! Excellant camping!!! Gettin better every year. You have 2 full hook up facilities there now and BLM will have there's ready by next year making it a total of three! 2 by the big dunes and one by the little dunes. DIVERSITY!!! The small dunes are easy to transition with no Razorbacks and lot's of fun jumps. The Big Dunes are quite Massive with very few Razorbacks, Trasitioning on these dunes is like being in heaven!!!!!! Not to many hidden surprises and the sand is pretty easy to read. The sand consitency is awesome here also. And the best part is NO DAMN DUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And No WIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the temps are very bearable in the summer. There is even a lake there you can dink around in. And it has the best bowls I have ever come across. They are completely round not half or 3/4 bowls like everywhere else. There aren't a lot of bowls but the ones that are there are AWESOME!! Beautiful scenary everywhere!!!!! THere is only one Drawback, Lava rocks! and Iron Wood. You have to pay attention particulry in the small dunes. I have never had an issue with them but many people do.

I of course can't discuss Oregon yet but I would really like to go there and see it. I just don't favor Salt Water getting on my stuff.

Well there you have it! A detailed survey of all the western dunes for the most part. I am sure the Majority of you will agree.

I would agree with Punisher. St Anthony is the BEST.
I ride LSUtah every other weekend and it is really nice, but can get nasty windy, dusty, and hotternhell in June to August.
I only have one thing to add about St. A. I was up there two weekends ago and it was 35 mph constant wind with 50mph gusts. SUCKED WAY BAD. But, the trip and riding was still great.

Tony- do you have room for 1 1/2? If I come up I'll be bring my son, we were gonna go camping at Knolls that weekend but St. A's would probably work too.
Who else is going that weekend (June 6th and 7th)?

I think the punisher pretty much summed it up best.

I will have to say glamis is the best. The only place you will see idiots is comp hill and oldsmobile, go out duning and you will hardly see anybody else even on the big weekends. The other thing you said about dust, you guys camped in the washes on the east side, its dusty over there and thats y we dont camp there. We camp at gecko on the the west side of the dunes where there is no dust, much better camping area. Sean
