Default New Baja, Lots of questions !!

Hey guys and Gals,

Well after many years of waiting I finally was able to purchase an ATV, and after the fall of Cannondale I came to the conclusion that there was only one other company that I would purchase a product from so I got a 03' DS650 Baja.. Now to the questions...

1.So. Cal and So. Nevada riders, any ideas on a good Bombardier dealer? have not had much luck with the selling dealer, and all local shops.

2. Has anybody found out how to stop the squeek coming from front brakes it is driving me crazy.

3. Where would I find a chrome 3" silencer cap? I live remote and noise is not really a problem will this mod give it a little more four-stroke thump? and what other adjustments would I need to make as far as jetting, and better air filter??

4.Any Dumont riders any suggestions would be apprecited as far as good paddles, oil, coolant. Basically anything Dumont or any dune riders are using on the DS650's

Much thanks for any help. please forgive for spelling

Default New Baja, Lots of questions !!

Congratulations on your new 2003 Baja, I picked up my second DS which is a 2003 Baja and couldn't be happier.

I think you are kinda far from the dealers I would suggest but my local dealers seem to be decent. JMG Motorsports and Simi Valley Honda.

I have no squeak from the front brakes so I can't help you there. It is probably the same thing that would make a car's brakes squeak. You could try resurfacing the rotors & pads with some heavy grit sandpaper, though I don't know if that would help or hurt the situation more.

Not many people make end caps - they cost about $100 if the seller is going to make any profit & at $100 people start seriously considering a full pipe. The HMF pipe is $189. If you open up your exhaust you will want to at least remove the air box lid & consider a higher flow filter. If you do these things you will need to re-jet. If you've never taken apart a carburetor assembled by Bombardier - you are in for a treat. The screws on the bowl are amazingly tight. I suggest finding the perfect size drill bit & drilling the head of the screw off then remove the rest of the screw (easily) with vice grips. Took me all of 10-20 minutes on my Baja, I did it the hard way on my 2001 which took an hour or so. Replace the screws with stainless steel allen heads. 3 4mm x 10mm and one 4mm x 12mm.

Paddles - I strongly suggest 22" paddles. If you like Skat Trak, get the 22" Extremes in the V or straight whichever you like. If you don't like Skat Trak, get Some Sand Skate I or Sand Skate IIs (depending on your budget) or some custom cut straight paddles for an amazingly light tire / wheel combo. Whatever you do, DO NOT get any of the cheap tires available. Those work OK for the small quads, but for a $7000 DS650 you need good tires. Skat Trak or Sand Tires Unlimited are the only way to go. I had some Kenda Trakkers - I used them one day and had to lift the back end of my DS out of holes about twenty or more times, it sucked.

I use Engine Ice coolant, I believe it works well, though I also installed radiator shrouds at the same time on my 2001. I'm going to install only the Engine Ice in my Baja & see what changes come about.

I use Maxima oil in my DSs, I bought a 5-gallon bucket of it so that I could save a little cash since I have two ATVs. DS650s use just under 4 quarts of oil per oil change, the manual says 3 quarts however I think they may have left the hoses out of the calculation or something.
