i visited my dealer the other day and bought some four-stroke oil for my baja and the dealer told me that if i get tired of paying 3.45 for a quart of oil that i could use any major brand of oil(non-synthetic) with the weight of 10w-40....and if i saw to many shavings to move up to 15w-40. i have always used yama-lube or suzuki oil and have always wondered at the amount of metal shavings that i find when i change the oil. the dealer said that any quality car oil will greatly reduce the amount of shavings......but he also said that my warranty might not cover the engine in the case of problems not even related to oil problems......what do u do?

I use kaw 10/40 for a while because I worked for a dealer and it seemed fine. Now I use Honda 10/40. Ive herd the car oil have additives not good for an atv but I dont know how true that is.

From what I understand, a manufacter can not restrict you to a specific brand of oil. Its against the (USA) law. After buying a Buell, I really checked into it, and all the rumors were non-factual.
In our climate, I use 20-50. Castrol or Pennzoil. Since I dump the oil frequently, I use the $23 per case stuff.
In the Buell, I ran Mobil 1 for twins (synthetic). Expensive, but I felt better since the outside temps were blistering my leg on the header.

Ok, call me crazy or rich, but ever since I broke the engine in on standard oil, I have used the Bombardier synthetic oil at $12.95 a qt. Every oil change! My engine is going to last a long time.
