Ignition switched hot wire?
#1
I have my fan on a manual switch. I hate all the automatic stuff. I want my fan on when I ride. Anyway..I wired it manually, but I think I cut into the wrong wire. It only come on when the ignition is on. But, if I leave the fan on and turn the key off......the bike will run for 2-3 seconds longer. Did I cut into a wire for the CDI? If so it can be spliced back together. But where can I find a hot wire that is not hooked to something else important? That is also easy to get to. Thanks.

If you connect the toggle switch to the existing fan switch wiring it will work fine. On the wires running to the fan switch, one is hot with key on, and the other runs to the fan. If you splice into each one of them with a 3M scotchlok with the wires going to a toggle switch, when you turn on the toggle the fan will run (providing the ignition switch is on). When you want to return it to stock, if ever, just remove the scotchloks and the toggle.

the bike continues to run for a few seconds because the fan is a permanent magnet motor that acts like a tiny generator from the rotation, which supplies the igniton with just enough power for a few more rpms after turning the key off. all ds's do the same if the key is turned off while the fan is running without first flipping the kill switch on the bars.
doing what Ken said will also maintain the automatic switch, so if you forget to turn it on, it'll still come on automatically when it needs to.
