Default adjusting suspension

i like to ride very fast over bumpy ground. sometimes it is a little hard to keep control because its a rough ride. i never jump more than maybe 1-2 feet at the very most. what would be the best adjustments to my suspension for my riding? because i don't jump much and very small jumps when i do, i'm thinking i have alot of travel not being used in my shocks. if i could somehow make my suspension very soft, i'm thinking i could get better control when driving fast over rough ground. i read the manual about adjusting, i know how, but it does not explain well what each adjustment does and how to use each adjustment together to produce a desired action. any help would be great...
