Default Timing Chain Plastic Guides.....concern/questions

Since I have my motor out I decided to replace the clutch while I was at it. Removing the clutch cover I saw the that the bottom end of the plastic timing chain guide was eating away a bit by a gear. Where does it supposed to rest? My friend said freely cause once you put the cam gear in it will hold it all in place. I'm just trying to go over everything in my motor. The shop manual doesn't really show where it should rest.

So where is it supposed to sit? Against the gear like that?

Is it near the impeller gear?

My friend said it should float and the chain will guide it.. but I push it back where it sits in a place.. but it seems to make the guide taller than the other....is this correct?
