DANGEROUS REAR BRAKES - What can I do?
GLWBEAR.
If you have not change the brake pads yet, don't. You need to be sure of the cause. If the rear brake lever is mushy and or has plenty of travel new pads will not make a differance.
If the lever is hard with a normal amount of stroke then pads my help if the rotor is not warped or glazed. If the pads looked glazed you can the the "wax on-wax off" rutine on the sidewalk. If the pads brake well once or twice after this you need some better brake pads and you will need to de-glaze the rotor.
Give us an update after some testing.

DANGEROUS REAR BRAKES - What can I do?
Okay, I spent almost all day on the Net & the telephone and no one makes brakes except the Stock brakes for the DS650. I asked if the after market Swingarm Mfg'rs might put a Banshee bracket on and I was told NO! I'm waiting to hear from Itally in reference to buying a 4 piston caliper set-up, no word as yet. In the mean time I'm replacing the pads with a carbon pad by EBC and will de-galze the rotor. Maybe that will help????
I don't care about the $$$ I just want to stop better. If I'm riding all the time in the sand it's no big deal. But I've had tooooooo many close calls in the dirt and on Fast Fire roads to know the DS-650 doen't stop for S--t! Somebody should make a kit where we can upgrade to better calipers and rotors. I mean I can't be the only person in the world who feels this way?
Please reply I need your comments and help!
Regards amd Happy Thanksgiving to All!

DANGEROUS REAR BRAKES - What can I do?
That's funny, my DS is a 2000 with the original braking equipment that it was built with in November 1999.
Over 3 years later, an easy pressing of the brake pedal with my foot will easily lock the rear tires at any speed in dirt. And a little harder will lock the tires on asphault no problem.
And the brakes do have some good use on them, for example, I was towed over 30 miles by a Polaris Sportsman accross STEEP downhills in the hilliest terrain you can find. That puts brakes to the test.
My front brakes are also as effective, just my front tires are crappy and don't give any bite.

I would agree with Spinner on this one. While the stock breaks (front) tend to feel a little spongy at times the rears have had NO problems. After the fixes that I wrote about earlier, my breaks lock up real easy, and I'm 6'10"/320lbs. Before I spent thousands of dollars and swing arms, calipers, and rotors, I would would take the entire system apart and completely go through it. The Breaks on the DS are great. If you want to eliminate the spongy front, get the braided line and be done with it.
don't let someone tell you that they are crap - the work well.
Do the extra work on the current system - you have a problem, now it's time to go back to the beginnig and work the problem. Throwing money at it in the fasion that your talking about will end with a hybrid. GOT MONEY?

DANGEROUS REAR BRAKES - What can I do?
Big Daddy: I think your right and I'm going to tear apart the rear caliper and see if there is any "Sticking" of the Pistons. Yet, if I could find another Bigger and better Caliper that would bolt-on I'd do it in Heart Beat! I also want to clear the air in refence to costs & $$$ I'm no rich guym it's just stopping a 500 pound machine with a 270 pound rider is a very important issue to me when I'm the rider.
Thanks for you comments.
