Default black soot/smoke = oil or rich mixture?

maybe its air then? i went riding on new land and didnt want to sit and mess with the quad so i just rode it how it was...

ill mess with it soon tho.... the screw is directly on the bottom side of the carb...takes like a number 3 flat blade screwdriver to adjust it...

(o and pushinthelimit, i think your right, i think im lean on the idle circuit, because its 20 degrees with mostly high speed riding and the fan actually kicked in today for the first time this winter, and i could actually FEEL the engine heat through 3 layers and my carharts!)

so if that screw is air mixture...i want to screw it IN? therefore RICHENING it?

If the screw is on the engine side of the carburator it is a fuel screw. If the screw is on the air filter side of the carb it is an air screw.

On a 4 stroke motor huh? I never heard of an air screw on a 4 stroke motor, and if it was important to jetting I would have heard of it...

I never said thumpers have air screws. I was just pointing out where they are located. Even though the link below doesn't say what I said.

Fuel Screws

The TM 45 has an air screw, no fuel screw. Just like a 2 smoke, turn in to richen, out to lean.
