Default black soot/smoke = oil or rich mixture?

at start up (which is somewhat difficult...) for around 3-5 minutes i get a lot of black smoke out the exhaust..... the discs on my WB pipe are also really black, and there is some residue on my grab bar as well....

is this oil burning or is it extra gas because of running too rich?

im thinking (and hoping...) its just rich still....

i have mbrp headers, kn filter, and wb pipe....175 main, screw at 2 and 3/4 turns out, and needle at lowest position (clip all the way up) (i ride at 800 ft above sea level)

it seems to run pretty well after about a 10 minute warm up except for at around 1/4 throttle (any any gear) it will miss (not actually miss, but bog) and throttle seems to be a little slow in that department....

the rest of the range seems to be good, but its pretty annoying when it starts to skip when im just cruising at around 1/4.....

still rich?

should i check my valve clearances?

i currently have 20w40 weight oil in there now...what should i run for winter? 10w40?

also, does anyone know where i can order single pilot/start jets? i would like to go a size smaller on the starter/pilot because i beleive this should ease starting, and maybe cure my 1/4 throttle dilemna....

Mike,

Oil does not burn black I think.. More of a grey/blueish color.

That is definetly a rich mixture, possibly at idle. Or your choke is stuck on.

i was pretty sure oil burnt a bluish color....

ya the whole idle circuit seems a bit rich.... im hoping one size down in a starter jet, and one size down in a Pilot jet will help....

and choke is ok (i generally keep it out for the first minute or so just because it lets it idle a tad higher and wont die asap) but once i start riding i push it back in

Play with the fuel screw a little bit. Turn it OUT about a half turn more and see if it's better/worse. If it's worse turn it in a little, but I believe you are a little lean yet so turn it out a bit. If that doesn't help much raise the needle one clip (lower the clip). I'll say it again, I believe you are running a touch lean on the idle/midrange circut transfer so play with the fuel screw FIRST to see if it gets better.

And I don't know why it would be smoking, because it's far from running that rich. You just might have that much carbon build up in the pipe from the clowns that jetted it before so run it for a while.

wouldnt the bogging be rich? i know lean can bog too....

cant you turn the needle till it bogs, then turn it the other way (counting the turns) and go until it bogs again, then put it in the middle?

i may try that

Yes you can. But try turning it either way once to see if you are lean or rich.
