Default Small oil leak???

I changed my oil last week on my 2000 DS. And after reading several posts on here about checking the small screen that is on the oil tank, I thought it would be a good idea to check mine. Long story short, checked the oil screen and went to re-install fitting. It seemed to go on alittle more snug than it came off and now I have a tiny bit of fresh oil working its way thru this area.

Questions:

1. Could I have possibly cross-threaded that fitting when re-installing?
2. If so..how can a fix be done..short of replacing the oil tank.?

Hope I didn't really screw anything up..going to the dunes this weekend for my first trip with the DS!

that is a npt fitting.(pipe thread) it requires pipe dope or teflon tape.I prefer pipe dope. did you use that? if not take it out and put some on. if you cross threaded it. you might be able to run a npt tap in and clean up the threads. there are other things you can do to fix the tank if its worse than that.

Default Small oil leak???

Busmechanic, looks like I might have cross-threaded the threads on the tank. Couple of questions:

1. Where can I get a tap to clean up the threads?
2. The threads on the actual fitting look alittle messed up as well- can I re-tap and use a fitting without the screen? I'm trying to get the DS back together for a trip this weekend to Silver Lake and won't have time to order a new fitting from Bombardier. Is the re-tapping process pretty easy..any other suggestions?

Thanks, Dingo

You can get NPT taps at NAPA, and most good hardware stores. Easy to use. Use a little oil on the tap, thread it in slowly little at a time and back out to let shavings come out. Every time you go in a little farther. Don't force it, it will break off on you. Easy, just be a little patient.

dingo2, couchonwheels explained pretty good. I have access to taps. but, I am not sure what size, and I am a little to far away to get you one in time for your ride. I would look for a fitting as well. it will probably leak and screw up the threads again. you might be able to find one without the screen for temporary use. they are cheap fittings. napa or another place that deals with hoses and fittings. not sure what you have for parts places out there. I will look and see if I can figure out what size it is for sure. hopefully you can salvage it without having to go to the next size up. then you would be without a screen. unless you could fasion your own.
