Default problem with starter....possibly have sand in it?

I got most all of my problems sorted out before this weekends trip to silver lake. Late saturday it started to have a HORRIBLE noise come from the starter while cranking it over.... a few times it would continue to spin the starter even when i let off the button....so i had to use the kill switch to cut power to it...and then after that it would fire up and the starter would stop. Now it seems to start pretty consistently, but the starter still makes a pretty awful noise....like a grinding type noise. (hard to explain...) im wondering if somehow sand got in there? or is that not a possibility?

since the engine turns over fine and runs well im assuming there isnt anything in the engine preventing the starter from doing its job....

i did have to jump my quad off a car battery 2 different times...but since then it has held a charge (i also found out its hard on the DS' charging system)

When it stuck was it still cranking the engine or was it just the starter motor spinning with no actual load on it?

im pretty sure it was just spinning - no load. (reason being is that the engine will fire up quite easily...usually like a single quick stab of the starter....so i would assume the engine would fire up if it was still pushing moving the piston.

(it seemed to spin fast, so my guess would be no load though)

for awhile i was wondering if maybe there was a loose connection, but i dont see how that would give any reasoning as to the loud grinding type noise.

has anybody else had a similar problem? Im hoping i can narrow it down to one thing so i can either repair/replace it myself, or if i do have to go through a shop to do it, i can tell them what needs to be done instead of getting charged for them to tinker...

Thanks guys

your starter has a solenoid which actuates the bendix (small gear) forward so it engages the flywheel before it spins,
yours is not doing this it could just be stuck but more likly it is faulty take it off and take it to your local auto electrician he should fix tit relativly cheaply.

I have never paid much attention to the one on the DS only had it for a couple of weeks and im away at work now so i cant check but that is how almost all starters work.
