Default 85 mph stock??/

Everybody has a friend or knows somebody that is a police officer. Blah blah blah. Well, I am a cop, so what!. A stock baja X will do just about 78mph stock. NO more, maybe less depending on terrain. If you are hitting the rev limiter on an X in 5th gear you ARE traveling right about 78mph. That is all the gearing is going to let you do. An older DS or one with a lower rev limit is going to be slower, about 2-3 mph. I HAVE used all sorts of methods, police radar, stalker radar, GPS, police laser. All have been within .5 mph of each other. With the laser and the GPS being most consistant. With 22inch rear tires, yes you will achieve higer top speeds, about 2mph more. With a larger front sprocket , 1 tooth, or a smaller rear sprocket, 2 teeth you will achieve about 5 mph more top end. But that wouldn't be totally stock gearing then, though it would qualify as a stock class machine at the races. I hope this info helps somebody.

My buddy took his Stock gearing DS Stage III (Ron Wood Racing rev box) down a 1/4 mile paved drag strip. His time sheet said he clocked 85 MPH. I forget the time it took him to get there but he said 1/2 waythru the strip he topped out. He now wants to gear it to reach 100 MPH.

Mine will do 82 according to the gearing calculator and a stock raptor will do 76 and a ds will do 75 alos according that same calcultor.

Raptors, Gearing calculators don't take into effect one huge factor, wind resistance and drag. A raptor has more wind resitance than a DS because of it's front fenders. They act as a parachute does on a dragster. That's why you see most of the pro quad racers trim their fenders down to mere nubs. That little modification is good for two to three mph more on a raptor, YFZ or a 450R. But the down side is your plastic is now ruined for any protection they did offer for regular riding. Also your resale value is adversely affected when you trade in or sell the quad. Honda knows this so they made their fenders removable as did arctic cat with the DVX. Horsepower, not really torque, is what overcomes the wind resistance factor. But horsepower needs to rise expodentially not incrementally at higher speeds that result in higher wind resistance. The DS has fenders right on top of the tires that aren't connected to the body and that gives a more favorable wind coefficient to that machine. That also helps in the DS being the fastest stock machine produced today. A stock Baja X will do 77-78 mph on a flat paved road, this is a known fact, if the DS had fenders like the Raptor it would probabally only do 74-75 mph.

If ya go to 22inch tires that's good for a couple mph. I went to 22's, a Woods CDI, and a 17 tooth front sprocket and I wouldnt be surprised if it does 90+mph, maybe even 95. Stock I can't see it doing 85 tho... The newer models only give ya a few hundred rpm over a 2001. That's not enough to get you to 85. 75 sounds about right.

Of course this doesnt matter a whole hell of a lot. I'm regearing mine down to stock gearing. The thing is tall enough that I burned up a clutch in a few weeks of trail riding!

Cop- So if the Raptor had Different Fenders or Fenders like the DS650 you think it would be the fastest ATV out there or what?

but the fenders on a raptor also help those wheelie riders, my buddy who has a stock raptor can pull his up in 5th, something i'll only dream of,

if any stock bike can pull up in 5th, there are some weight distributtion problems in the design. why would you want something that pulls the wheels off the ground all the time when you dont want it to? then you have to let off and it slows you down, so all that power that goes into lifting the bike up is completely wasted when it could be used to make it go forward.
