Great Weekend of Racing!
#1
Here is the setting.
B E A utifullllll! day at Coral Pink!
82* F
slight breeze
Sunny and Clear
Machines:
03 Bomb with 11.5:1 piston, 110 Web Cams intake, Modified RW Exhaust, RW CDI, HP Research 46HV Carb, 22/11/10 Extreme Haulers, 14/40 gearing. MINE!!!!
Rider = 310lbs
96 Yamaha Banshee (Banshee1), High Comperssion Pistons, Adjustable Stator Plate, Exhaust (not sure what kind) airbox mods, Boost tube thinging majig, dyno tuned at Sand Tech, super light sled with just about everything taken off.
Rider = 168lbs
03 Bomb stock with Big Gun exhaust, K&N and dyno tuned stock carb.
Rider = 308lbs
89 Yamaha Banshee (Banshee2), Stock Motor (yea right!) with Carb mods, Boost tube thingy, airbox mods, jetting and a VERY GOOD rider!
Rider = 183lbs
Year??? Suzuki Quadzilla, Built motor, piped, dyno'd, shaved fenders - owner would come clean with motor mods, but the said it had "a little work done to it".
Went to what we call comp at Coral Pink.... very long, about as long as Comp at Dumont, but not as steep. That said, you don't start on the flats, you start on an incline and the sand is MUCH more SOFT! Coral Pink duners will attest to that. First race was kind of a get-to-know-ya race and starts were kind of week on behalf of the two-strokers. Needless to say, that I smoked everyone there.
BigDadddy = 1
Everyone Else = 0
Next Race, was a good start and the stock bomb and supposedly stock Banshee brang up the rear behind the Zilla. Of course the modded Shee and my bomb smoked everyone, but were within two wheels of each other - I took the race!
BigDaddy = 2
Everyone Else = 0
Roll on race, I got the Bashee2 by about 5 bike lengths, but lost to the Bashee1 by about 1.5 lengths.
BigDaddy = 2
Everyone Else = 1
Now, the next race proved to be the final race of that session. Had the pilor of Shee2 race my quad. figured that closely weighted riders would be a better race. This guy is a VERY good friend of mine, and a tremendous rider. Of course everyone was giving me a hard time, about "that's not fair", "he's lighter than you" blah, blah, blah. I quickly countered with, "I tell you what, put somebody else on the back of your sled and then we'll race.... even easier I'll ride yours and you ride mine". That shut everyone up REAL quick. Funny thing is that no one wanted to race except the modded Shee (Shee1). The bikes lined up, and I must say that the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.... well I least I was very nervous
AS we sat at the top of the hill, the start looked as if it was extremely close. Remember that the guy riding my bike doesn't have a lot of experience riding my bike. He made one pass and then they lined up. The start looked close, but by half track, the DS had the modded Shee by about 5 lengths, and the owner of the Shee, just put his clutch hand up and just waved the mighty DS off. There was NOTHING he could do. NO magic, no shifting tricks, no NOTHING. I was even more amazed that the DS continue to pull the SHEE. Shee's ususally start to walk away from stuff when they reach the top of there band. The DS pulled, and pulled and beat the Shee by what most say was about 7 - 8 lengths at the top.
My buddy hopped off of my Bomb and simply said "man.... NASTY, VERY NASTY". I didn't have to say a word. Everybody kind of knew that there was a new king in our camps. BigDaddy's DS was something that shouldn't be messed with. The two stroke guys massaged thoughts of buying four strokes right up to packing it all in for the weekend. I never said a word.
I know that there are LOT'S of Shees that are sick-fast. Most have thousands into them. I would simply say, go see my Buddy Mario..... I've got the following into my sled:
Pistons $100
Cam $135
Carb $650
Exhaust $350 (original exhaust - I now use Mario's modified RWR's)
CDI $250
Total $1,485
Pretty good result buying a little used stuff here and there, and my own labor.
Two strokes are awsome and have there place. Dune supremecy will always be debated. I haven't found a DUNE'd two stroke that will ride with me in the desert. Seems that once they go over the top, and put a couple G's into their bikes, they lose the trailability. Just my take on it, then again I'm just a big freak of nature
Oh' just in case you were wondering. Similar riders on the DS's yielded about a 10 - 12 quad length difference. The other DS didn't have a CDI though. That's next on his list.
Thoughtfully,
BigDaddy
