I had the same problem. I was using regular auto bulbs (1157) and every few rides I would have to change it. So I went to the local cycle shop (they sell a lot of Harley parts) and bought a bulb from them that was 2 dune trips and 12 or so trail rides ago and no more problems.

Replaced the whole thing with the LED light set-up from Billet Banshee.
They will ticket us at Sand Mt. if we don't have a tail light. I was blowing through them constantly so, went this way.

I was going through 1157's every ride. Then i switched to an led bulb and it work for a few months, but somehow also burned out the marker light function. I am also going through headlight bulbs too now. Got an aftermarket regulator coming, hopefully will fix the problem. We have lights, be nice if you could count on them.

I too hate the enevitable "out" brake light....
I've got that problem, or actually had that problem on a dirt bike (streetable) and my DS....
(I researched different ideas for a looooong time, and many different combinations until I found the right answer)
Here's how I fixed mine;
DS - Rear of DS
XR - XR - rear
On the DS, I used a flushmount LED oval tail light similar to what's found on a semi-trailer or boat trailer. It's almost too bright for a 'cool' look, but works awesome for a brake and tail light. Probably the best I've ever used. I think the strip lights are clean and cool to look at, but don't offer the brightness I needed or wanted. Mine's large and in charge, when the strip lights are better if you've got a drag quad or something that is more a 'show boat' than a working quad.
I used a strip light from JCWhitney on my XR... it's only $10 and works killer. I use it only as a brake light though... and you'd need a second light or the resistor to make it a running light and a brake light.
Good luck.
