Ride report - front Sand Stars
#1
Just got back from a trip to the dunes over the weekend with my new front Sand Stars. All I can say is they made a huge difference. I'm running 9-paddle Xtremes in the back and all this thing wants to do is go straight with the front stockers. The front Star's just make it that much more fun to ride. At slow speeds you can now get the front end to bite and allow the back end to slide around more like a V-paddle. The biggest difference I found was while treking the side of a dune I can now point the front end back up the hill and over the top. With the nobbies I had to either keep riding out the side of the dune or point it back towards the bottom. I paid ~$165 from Rocky Mountain.

I have always used front sand tires on my ATVs, so the thing that has struck me through the years is all the complaints about poor steering I have heard from other people running straight paddles. I only use straight paddles and have never thought steering was a problem at all, so I frequently wondered why everyone complained about steering. Well Hello, ... its the front tires people, LOL. I can't believe all the people that buy a set of rear sand tires based on what the front tires are doing (or not doing in the case of knobby front tires). Why not buy rear sand tires that work the best, and then get a set of front sand tires to take care of the front end. I assume that DSengineer got wheels as well, because front sand tires are only $30 to $40 each, depending on brand. Front sand tires are cheap, and definitely worth the money. Good post DSengineer.

Amen, I run skat trak mohawks on the front and love them. I can swing the beast around with ease. Everyone that rides my machine swears there next purchase is front sand tires! I have heard good things about them sand star fronts, good to hear you like them also.

But what style rear paddles do you run ??
I had the mowhawks and didnt think they were MUCH better than the stockers... for what its worth, I run the 20" 10 paddle Extreemes.

Yes I too swear by fronts. I run the 22" dune trackers with 22" extreme haulers in the back.
IMO the segmented ribs in the front that some styles have are not good on the DS, they dig in deeper especially when braking. The solid rib IMO handles better and turns better and an 8" wide gives better floation in the soft stuff.
but no front tire can allow straight paddles to match the fun factor of a vee in the back - vees can whip around a donut and turn on a dime like no straight paddle with any combination of front can offer, they're just more fun on trail rides. But for all around duning and busting through razors off a sidehill I will pick the haulers anyday.
what I wanna know, is does the double rib on those new sand stars perform better than a single rib? I've not talked to anybody yet that has ran both to see the dif.

I ran two different brands of single rib front sand tires before trying the dual rib front Sand Stars, and the dual rib front tires are better. We have tried the dual rib front tires on a V-Force, a DS650, and a YFZ, and they work great on all three machines.
