Default Smoke this for a minute

Many of you know that I've tried all the popular carbs for the DS. Each had their own great things about them, and yes the stocker has it's place. But here is the problem.....

The stock carb comes with a 165 jet, I believe. After pipe and the dyno, the carb was at a 180 main. I added my piston and intake cam. Went to the 185 and the plug was bleach white. Went to a 185 and the plug was bleach white. Can't get that type jet in a 190 from the dealer (supposedly isgust so I drilled to a 197.5. White again. NO BEIGE AT ALL.

Now I realize that I could need a 285 for crying out loud, but conventional wisdom would say that I should be in the ball park. The bike runs GREAT. Idles great, and performs as advertised.

The question is this. Is the CARB not capable of anymore fuel? I am going to try to drill up to a 200 - 205.

Anybody know of someone who has a TM45 or 48 that is for sale? Also, does anyone have some stocker experience w/ modifications?

Need to get this worked out BEFORE Halloween.

Check the What's in your Garage Thread. I think someone had an extra TM45!

Get to a local dyno. A good shop should be able to fit different jets for you or if the carb won't work they should be able to tell you. Only one way to do this right, on the dyno with an air/fuel monitor. Sorry, I don't have that much experience with the stocker.

It could be that with the fuel you are using you aren't going to see a good reading. Most of the info on reading a plug is from a 2-stroke that has oil in the gas mix. Our fuel is obviously much cleaner.

Here is more info on the TM45. There is also a pdf tuning guide.

From what I understand the TM45 and the HSR45 are the same.

Hey B.D. ... you get me thinking of a conversation I had with Ron Woods bout a year and a half ago. I was doing some tunning on my Bomb and got to talking to him about reading the plug for color. His comment to me was that to properly read the plug you need to look INSIDE the end of the plug where the insulator meets the metal not the tip of the insulator as commonly thought. I was a bit surprised by this revelation but who was I to question sombody that has been working on the Rotax 650 for as long as him?
I have followed that advice and backed it up with my O2 sensor & meter I put together for tunning and my bike has ran like a champ since. My plug color has always been spot on!

Just thought I would throw that in ..... BTW Im waiting on a few more new parts till I get the Lectron dialed in. So far so good, man was that thing set up rich !! You must have been trying to feed that beast !!

Mike,
I do beleive the tm45 and cv42 mains are same size tread, just ones a large head and one is small. I could check tonight for sure. If they do work I do have the 200,210,215 mains I got from you if you want to use them? up to you.

Thanks for the info guys.... as far as the 42 goes and plug indications go, I know about the reading of the plug inside the plug. I've even got a little fuzz on the electrode. I have the lean condition from 180 all the way through to 197.5. I wonder if the stocker is even capable of fueling to that level in the high range.

good idea though, I'll call Elliot today.

Prozac, yes..... that monster was set up rich, and it was feeding something feirce!!!! It propelled my sled at least 5 bike lengths more than I am at now.

Prozack, the stocker was NEVER on the dyno after the piston and cam change. When I put it back on, the performance was great and is great, however, as I said before I need to get some color out of the plugs. I need more than something that is on the edge of being too lean. The NO2 dictates that, and I'm not one for melting a motor down due to the stockers inability to adaquately fuel the beast.

As far as the stocker jets being the same as the TM's jets.... yes the threads are the same, howeve the big head of the TM jet does not fit in the barrel of the stocker. You can run the jet without the barrel, but you change the where the jet sits in relation to the needle. I tried it that way and there was a definite difference. I'm hoping that I can pick up a TM in the next week or so. I'm in bad shape for Dumont over Halloween.

Someone please HELP!!!!!!

I got Shmee looking into something for me, and anyone else that is willing to help, I've got dinner waiting for you in Vegas. I'm in bad shape for something that will flow.

Big daddy, check your nozzle jet. no matter how big you go with your main, if it isnt big enough it wont let more fuel through. You may need to get a bigger nozzle.
