Special gearing question.....
Ok I have done some minor searching and found my gear ratios. Now these don't have to be the "real" ratios, as I am just going to use them as a comparison.
The point of this is that when I ride, I find I never use my first gear. So a thought occured to one of my friends to gear the quad so that my first gear acts like my second gear. This would effectively almost give me another gear.
I'll see if I can make a chart to put this stuff in so it's easier to follow.
Stock Gearing
2.75, 1.75, 1.31, 1.05, 0.95
17 Tooth
2.58, 1.65, 1.23, 0.99, 0.89
18 Tooth
2.44, 1.56, 1.16, 0.93, 0.84
19 Tooth
2.32, 1.47, 1.10, 0.88, 0.80
20 Tooth
2.20, 1.40, 1.05, 0.84, 0.76
Now if I don't use my first gear, and changed my front sprocket to effectively make my first gear the same as my stock second gear, what would be wrong with that picture? I may not have enough power to pull 5th in the upper rpm's, I don't think I'd lose any bottom, because like I said I always use second gear to start out and whatnot, so now first would be just like second was.
Has anyone tried this or anything? Or can anyone comment on why this wouldn't work? I just don't see anyone running say a 18-40 combo on 20 inch tires. and if they do go bigger tires then they drop a tooth. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

As you increase the final ratio ( because changing actual gearbox ratios is not practical ) for more top end the ratios in transmission become further spaced apart, you could run 20/40 but the jump in ratios between 1st and 2nd will greater than 2nd to 3rd with 15/40. The lower you go the closer the ratios between gears become.
