Default OT Any Raptor decompressor knowledge out there?

Sorry for the off topic, but I'm powering up my sons raptor on the down low with a stage 1 hot cam. A lot of his friends run Raptors, so I can't check with my raptor buds.

I tried three times to get the decomprossor to work in the bike, but every time the motor wouldn't turn over past the "decompressor tit". Tit, spring, slide in the "rotator" flat side toward spring - done. Then drop the cam in, set it in the guide grooves on cam weights. Yes I didn't pay to much attention, but the job looked simple.

Right now, I got the bike back together and it runs great, but I kind of would like to put the decompressor in. Anybody else not running it on stock compression with no issues. Honestly, I think his bike starts better without it, or the CAM helped a lot on the starting.

Thanks

Put the spring on the decompressor pin, put the decompressor pin and spring assembly into the hole, use a small screw driver or all and push the decompressor pin out the opposite hole otherside. Slide the "rotator" in the end of the cam, pull out the all/screwdriver. Turn the lever "rotator" so the pin is sticking out the hole. There is a dot on the lever (cam gear end) as well, you want that at 12 O clock to the cam, top of the cam would be with the lubricating hole to the top and the decompression pin sticking out of it's hole at about a 10 O clock position.

When you install the cam put the lubricating holes to the top and the decompressor pin sticking out its hole to the top left as you look at the cam gear. Install the gear and line up the dots on the gear even with the top of the head and the other dot at 12 O clock from those dots. Important = line up the dot on the "rotator" at the 12 Oclock position also, the pin should be sticking out the hole when the cam and gear is installed and all dots lined up.

Once everything is installed you should be able to spread the weights apart, the "rotator" will spin a little and the tit from the decompressor will recede into the hole and come back out once you let go of the weights.

All dots lined up, the decompressor is working properly put it back togather, all is good.

If you run the bike without the decompression mechanism in place, you run the risk of not having the proper oil pressure to the head/valves. It will be easier for oil to just run out the end of the cam (if you removed the lever "rotator") and the holes where the decompressor pin goes into, thus less oil pressure coming out the lubricating holes. People that run without the decompressor pin usualy weld up the end where the lever goes and the decompression pin holes.

Hope that helped.

There is a complete Raptor service manual and microfiche in my signature link along with other helpful stuff for your Ds as well at the bottom of the page, thanks to my brother Eaglecollector.

>>Put the spring on the decompressor pin

doh! I was putting the spring on top of the pin after putting the pin in the cam.

I have your manual, but couldn't find anything on assembling the decompressor. Maybe if they drew a picture like a beer bottle I could find it better.

Thanks for the excellant advice and directions!!

Ooops, that pin and spring combo won't work very well that way.

Page 5-22 of the manual is where the assembly process of the cam starts. It doesn't show how to assemble the pin and spring but, if you download the microfiche also and look at the parts for the camshaft and chain it somewhat shows the relation of all the parts. It will also give you part #'s and prices. It's for a 2001 year but most of the stuff is the same and if a part was updated the part# you give them from this microfiche will show an updated part on the dealers fiche.
