Pulling the head and jug

Not sure where you got that I own an "x"??? Mines a red monster from 03....
We've been arguing over the "grind or not to grind" issue for longer than my three years on this forum.... here's my reasoning on the don't grind issue.
1. Unless you have a good mechanical knowledge and/or fabrication back ground, you can make one heck of a mess our of your frame. Granted that it's not that hard, but simply dropping the front of the motor, makes a lot of sense for the non-mechanically inclined. Jackass might be a complete bad-*** when it comes to this stuff, but from his post, I took him to be kind of green in the middle.
2. Once you grind that area, unless you color match or get real darn close, it's going to look like you modded the frame. No big deal most of the time, but if you go to sell your quad later, then an entire explanation has to take place as to why you did it. Then the questions start to come about what was done and who did the work..... all this could very easily lead up to a lost sale due to your grinding modification.
3. Taking out one extral bolt might be a tad less threatening than grinding part of your frame.
4. While I know that most of you on this forum split atoms, and build rockets along with bullet trains in your spare time.... something tells me that Bombardier put made the frame the way they did to give it as much strenght as possible. I know that the grind isn't alot of material being removed, but why if you can simply remove a bolt.
I do however think that if you are a guy like me who has a back ground in fabrication and mechanics, and like to do your own work...... have at it, it makes for a VERY easy path for your head removals in the future. If you are going to powder coat your frame anyway, then it might be something that might work out great for you. If you do chose to do the mod.... go slow and be safe.
let us know how it goes.

Bigdaddy does bring some good points to the table. Well said, I especially like number 2. I agree with you in the end when it comes down to what your capable of. If you can do it and do it right then have at er, but if your lost from the beginning, best not try something that could lead to a big boo-boo down the road.
Basically I think this is over and done with, the information is there, and there's nothing more anyone can do but that. Good luck with whatever your choice.

I took a sazall and cut on the sides of the bracket about 3/8" into the frame. Then grabed the middle metal piece with a 12" cresent and rolled it back toward the air box. No grinding and looks great. Literally a 60 second mod and you don't have to worry about grind particles all over the motor.

The pictures of my grind in "my pictures" is from before I cut out the center piece of my frame all together and removed the upper motor mount to make plenty of room for the dual FCR's
The grind area is kinda on the bottom area of the crossmember so, I doubt anyone would ever notice it. Especially with the motor mount on.
Take a look at my pictures and think about it with the motor mounted up. No one will ever see it, even on close inspection. Besides, doesn't hurt a thing. There is plenty of meat there.
I didn't grind so much that I could lift it straight off just enough that with a small push of a bar the flex of the head-bolt studs would allow it to pop over the cross-member and be removed.

i think i will just wait until i get the whole motor pulled this weekend hpoefully then pull the head and jug and check my ring endgaps, i would rather not grind and cut, next time a year or two down the road when i have to do it again ill just pull the motor again it cant be that much work lol thanks fellas, when it comes to 2 stroke skidoo triples im an awesome mechanic but this 4 stroke rotax i am very green at, but i did adjust my intake valves i am learning lol slowly but surlely lol

Jackass, I think that your probably headed in the right direction. Chosen put this to bed and I think he's right. Looks like you made your choice, good luck, and go slow. Motor is a little heavier than you might think, so it might help to have a buddy there with you when you pull it. If you are going to grind/cut/paint/powdercoat, now would be the time to do it. You'll will never get a better chance then when the motor is out.
good luck
