The DS is a great midrange machine, in order to meet the air/fuel requirements you need to have the slide open faster to match the motor/ignition range.
The timing is all out by 5500 rpm and the slide should be open by 4000rpm to take advantage of the torque that can be produced. A CV carb not only controls air but also the needle jet that controls mid and top fuel requirements. No air/no fuel = no torque in mid range. Having the carb all open just before you have to shift is not very effecient.

That should be at least three different carb springs since the DS's release. I bought a couple different part #s last year to test and I know they were different in tension if I remember correctly.

I opened the top of my carb last night and my spring is at least 6 inches long. I have an 2000. How much should I cut off mine? I don't have any mods at this time, but I plan on ordering one of those new tunable end caps. Thanks

All factory springs were less than 4" long. It appears someone put a different spring in your carb or someone took the stock spring and stretched it to 6 inches.
I would recommend buying the new spring from the 2005 DS models.
Rule of thumb was to never cut the spring less than 3 to 3 1/8 overal length.
Stack height is around 2 7/8 inches. You need alittle load at rest so slide does not bounce at low speed when going over rough terrain.
The original cutting the spring by 4 coils was based on the stock spring being 3 5/8 length.
