Based on what guys told me a couple of weeks ago I equipped my DS with 22" haulers on the rear and went with the sand stars on the front. I rode all last weekend at Glamis and they were awesome.

p.s. I have sand stars on the rear of our Z400 so I use them both.

"I have gone thru about 8 fronts sprockets so far on my DS, 4 different brands, and Titax is what I'm sticking with. "

Hightower....why? Cant imagine them wearing out like that.

I live right next to 2 dunes so I get some decent time with the dunes plus hard desert riding. My stock front sproket looks fine.

Am I not looking for the right wear signs?

I only got slightly less run time outa the primary drive, I don't mean to dog it, terrain and conditions may have been to blame.

I get a little less than 100 hours out of front sprockets, the stocker and a RWR front really weren't much better in life than the cheapers ones, although I don't have an exact hour count for each that I've tried, just know how many months I got outa them.

Alot of the wear may have to do with where I ride, I ride alot of gravel pit sand/peagravel, as well as mud and creeks, and all that crap takes its toll. Rider weight may contribute too, as well as tires/traction. I run without the sprocket cover, because its alot easier to clean out all the crap from behind it after each ride with it removed, and I wear mx boots so no pant leg grabbing danger. And i like to yank wheelies everywhere, in every corner, and over hills, and the stage II motor work puts a pretty good hammer to the sprockets too, contributing to "hooking".

What I look for is the appearance of tooth "hooking". If I look at the front sprocket and the teeth appear "hooked" then that's when I replace it. I could probably get more life outa them if I pushed it to the limit, but when I see the hooking starting to look obvious I chuck them. the higher grade tool steels and stuff would no doubt last longer, but they are just so prciy. On a side note, I won't change to a 520 chain, becasue the 530 is 50% wider and I already wear teeth so bad, I can't imagine how fast I'd wear a skinny 520.
