desertviper try moving your shift lever to a more comfortable and natural position, I had to lower mine one notch when I first got it due to missing shifts wearing riding boots. gotta take that bolt all the way out to pull the lever off

I seemed to be having just as many problems getting my foot under the shift lever as I did raising the shift lever far enough to fully engage the next gear, so after analyzing the problem I could not see that moving the lever in one direction would be any better than the other. I wanted to try a smaller more flexible pair of riding boots first, but might end up taking another look at that shift lever. Thanks for the input.
