Battery a must with a DS?
#1
It seems to me that the stator alone on the DS will not allow it to run. I had a problem trying to start my DS today. Possibly flooded it....pretty sure I did. Well, I ran the battery way down to dead. Then I had my son tow me and I tried to start it using 5th. After a few tries it finally started to fire if I held the throttle wide open. Well it was "running..." but horrible. It was poping and banging. I kept it up for about 25 seconds and it just cleared up. Normally I would have thought, oh the plugs were just fouled. But I just happend to get a call from a friend today with a 02 Baja telling me his DS was poping at about 3000rpm and was having a hard time figuring out the problem. Then he remembered his battery cables were loose, he tightend them down and it fixed his problem. So this makes me think that the DS needs a battery....for some reason to run. I was taught that (most engines) the stator/alternator was there to supply power for all needs and the battery is just there for the starter purpose only.

This makes me think about a solid power source like a capacitor....like one used in the big car stereo systems these days. If the DS is that dependant on a battery, I would think we all suffer from engine power loss from time to time. Plus ...most batteries wont last if the battery is worked that way....and mine is about done. Any ideas of installing an inline power capacitor?

Mine has done the same thing to me trying to pull start it. It ran like crapola not even enough power to pull itself around. As far as the capacitor thoery I could do a little test, I have a spare 1 farid cap from an old system I used to run. I would think that would be more than enough to handle the DS's electrical system. The only problem would be where to mount it, its about 4.5"diaX11" long, and I know that on a car stereo its just an inline installation so that part would be cake. Could'nt hurt.......right? no really....... it could'nt, could it?

I would think a small capacitor would be more than what we are looking for. I just feel that if the DS relys on a battery for power....we should make sure its getting all the power the CDI needs. What if my battery is on its last leg just putting "enough" to make it not pop and bang, and makes a weak spark = droping overall performance. The capacitor should make sure its getting the power it needs.... The capacitor will not stop the dead battery issue or start the quad, but it will/should take the constant load off the battery. I just dont get why the DS cant run without a battery, maybe with the capacitor it will????
Maybe the reason for the pop and bang is because the stator makes power in pulse (right?) and the voltage is on and off via stator rotation. It may use the battery to steady the voltage. Still, I dont get why its like this. Many dirtbikes and quads have no battery. The DS is known to have a HUGE stator. ACG 290W range - DENSO is what the factory specs say.

ACG = Automatic Call Gap
call: 1. In communications, any demand to set up a connection. 2. A unit of traffic measurement. 3. The actions performed by a call originator. 4. The operations required to establish, maintain, and release a connection. 5. To use a connection between two stations. 6. The action of bringing a computer program, a routine, or a subroutine into effect, usually by specifying the entry conditions and the entry point. 7. A customer attempt for which complete address information (e.g., 0-, 911, or 10 digits) is provided to the serving dial tone office.
gap: A period of low energy content signals present of a digital speech interpolation device.
