Cam choice

ANNIHILATER,
The only thing I have changed from my old set up that reved quickly is the piston and cam. I had a Ron Wood Racing 11.5:1 and A1A2 cams. I was happy with that, but wanted more. Now I have the older style 14:1 and the .425 lift cam. Again, lots of power and torque, but the revvs dont ramp quickly.
Other components are ported head, TM45, & Ron Wood Exhaust.

marky tell them about that 730 you put together for ron that was a great torque machine, and i have rode a few big bores i have a really neat thing for my exhaust pipe it's these disks put those on and that will change how the torque works, and and there adjustable. no cam change needed

OK....As most of you know I'm new to this Bomb stuff and don't pretend to know $hit. So the only way to learn is to ask those in the know. I've tried reading all the posts on the cams but nearly all of you are talking about highly modified bikes. Would it be worth the cost to add cams to a stock engine with only a pipe and carb jetting done? And if so which cam would best suit a stock engine and only riding dunes as a form of play, no serious racing.....

I think the difference here is what I want, as opposed to what somebody else wants. The approach I've taken to this thread is how I like my motor built for my riding style. For example, the 720, 730, 800 CC motors do provide VERY good torque & top speed. But, I know that alot of DS riders have difficulty with competing with the YFZ in a race up a short dune drag like Comp Hill. The YFZ is high strung, and has no bottom end. They race it by revving until they bounce off the limiter and dump the clutch. All the power it mid and high. I totally realize this is not what everyone wants - its simply what I want. I put a very expensive stroker in my 440 a few months ago, and I just ripped it out last week. Yes, I gained huge HP numbers, torque, and top speed. But it couldnt race up comp hill. When I went to a tree shot, I was reduced from 2nd gear with the front end coming up to 1st gear. That my man, is the difference! I know you've riden my 440 before, and you should ride it now. The last things I did since sand mountian is put a race head on it, lightened the flywheel, put some very top end cams in there, & lightened the crank. In a YFZ race, the EX has no problem up comp hill - beats the YFZ by 2-3 lengths. Yes, I lost 10 mph in top speed, I lost 5 hp from destroking it, but it wins where I want it.
Now, I am totally not ******* the big bores - Just 3 days ago I got a call from a young man here in Oregon that wanted my advice on where to get a big bore - I sent him to MrHP.
Have a great Friday!

SandBomber lol, thats awesome!
Yea thats a good question, most these bikes are highly mod'd up, what about a stock engine goin to a piston/cam/titanium valves with just a carb and pipe cam choice wise? Im kinda leanin toward the HPR cams since they r fit to my bike and riding style

This is what I would also like to know for a stock bore. I want to stay ahead of YZF's on dirt in 300 ft.
Probably practice would also help.

One thing i noticed when racing against my cousins YFZ is that they are so light they take off like a bullet, but most YFZ'rs like to use racing tires like holeshots / razrs to keep a racing theme goin or what not lol, but with those tires and the light weight machine and the power it puts out, off the line its either gonna spin like crazy or wheelie like crazy (depending on rider and outside conditions like wet grass), but with mine i raced him with Razr II's and lost due to wheel spin, i raced him with my Mud Sharks and won, u beat them off the line and they have a hard time catching up to the DS, since the DS is known for its mid and top range power thats y im going for more low end, even with sacrificing a lil top end like wit a 15 tooth sprocket theres still enough power mid and top to be a hard challenge for most bikes to keep up with, my racing thoughts
