Default extra lighting?

I have installed the Baja lights on my 03 Viper DS, and they make a big difference. I bought them from Parker Yamaha in Arizona, and the kit cost around $120 shipped, as I recall. It comes with everything you need, including the wiring, which just plugs into the existing wiring harness, and uses the existing switch. The directions call for pop riveting (the rivets are included with the kit) the slotted aluminum pieces together, but I went to Home Depot and got some little bolts and nuts to use instead. I am not very mechanically inclined, but after six hours, a six pack, and scraped up knuckles, they were installed. The Baja lights use common automotive H3 bulbs, so you can consider upgrading to higher wattage bulbs if you want.

I'm not sure what year you have now, but up to 03 used a common H4 bulb in the main headlight. The stock bulb is 60 watts, you can get higher wattage bulbs through JC Whitney (cheap) or PIAA (expensive). Before you start adding higher wattage bulbs, read some of the old posts about how much wattage the stator can handle without having battery problems. There are tons of old posts under that subject.

Are you sure it's TRUE H.I.D. lighting? I was under the impression that that type of system was up around 1,000.00. If it is the real deal, send me a PM, as I'd like to get some info from you...lol.

It would probably cost $200 to get some high-quality bulbs that give out the whitish/bluish light that sort of LOOKS like HID, but is not the real thing. $200 for REAL HID, including new bulbs, ballasts and whatever else is needed seems like a smokin deal. Sign me up, I would sure be interested.

Default extra lighting?

On my Baja I changed the headlight to the new style light. My old one was broken and the new style light was cheaper and I think looks better. The issue of the new light being lighter has been challenged, if there is any weight savings at all, it is very minimal. As far as light out put goes, I don't really have a fair comparison.

My original light setup was 55/100w H4 main bulb and 55w H3 bulbs in the Baja lights. All three bulbs were Xenon, which gave a whiter look then the stock yellowish color. I ran this setup for 2 years and never had any problems, although you have to be smart about it and only run the Baja lights when you have the rpms up.

The new style headlights use H6M bulbs, I swapped in a pair of Xenon 35w bulbs to get a whiter light. The output is not very impressive.

My last trip to glamis, I have a set of trail techs helmet lights. They are a pair of billet HID lights that mount to your helmet. The bulb housing is the same size of a MR11 bulb, they only draw 11w each and the output is amazing. I ended up returning them because I didn't care for the helmet mounted lights. I will be replacing my headlight with a pair of traitech MR16 HID, these draw 30w each and put out over 90w each.

devilontheDS, I assume you have the old style light (pre 2004)? If so you only have one H4 bulb. You can find H4 HID conversion kits all over the place for under $300. The kits are made for cars, so that means 2 lights. So you could buy a kit, use one of the lights and sell the other one.

Check out HID store

Or on eBay to a search for "H4 HID" you have to weed through all the expensive HID look alike bulbs.

the kit desi can get is as far as we can tell a true hid it comes with the bulb, harness, capaciter (ballast like florescent lights have. so i would assume that its an actuall hid kit. supposedly it draws 30 amps and from the pictures in his catalog if its half as good as it looks should be a huge improvement. the msrp on the kit is 269.99 my cost is 200.00 after tax no shipping or handling charges. he said he's install it for me for 65$ but im his mechanic so i'll obviously do it myself. i'll talk to desi and see if he can get a group deal if you guys are intreted in them.

Heck yeah I'm interested!!! The last time I priced something, it was almost $900.00. Of course it was a huge light...lol. It was at least 10" in diameter. I don't even run a headlight on my DS. The light housing was broken when I picked this quad up. The guy I picked it up from had apparently cracked it, then instead of replacing it, he wired up two of those cheesy Wal-Mart special lights, and mounted them on the front bumper. The bulb in the headlight gave off this nasty yellow light that barely lit up the ground 2' in front of the bike...and only one of the Wal-Mart lights actually came on. I just ended up taking them all out, and don't ride at night anymore.
I'd like to get something set up before the next dune season.
