Default New CDI

Well I recieved my new Procom CDI and rectifier last night. I have read in some of these forums that they can cause problems, but being the "THICK HEADED MULE" that I am I had to try it. You just cant beat the price and all of the CDI's that I did research on seem to claim the same gains. I could regret this HOPE NOT!!?? I did read somewhere that alot of CDI's cause some kind of reversing effect in the starter or crank?????Could some kind sir school me on what to keep an eye out for.

you'll know when the cdi is bad. It will sound like your cranks snapped in half and it will stall at low rpms. Bring your stock reg.rec with you. The procomm one won't charge your battery enough and it will leave you stranded. Oh, you won't notice any gains with the products either.

There are always those who claim the sky is falling......It's one thing to ask opinions of those in the know, it's quite another to ask the question and get an answer from people who are just echoing rumors.

Some individual on this site have made claims that the Procomm CDI causes kick back and yet there are quite a few others who use the Procomm and have had no problems what so ever. All I can suggest is try it, you are the best person to determine if it works for you. If you feel the supposed kick back or it doesn't perform to your expectations then replace it....

Personally I purchased the Big Gun Over Rev CDI. Some have suggested that Procomm makes them for Big Gun but I tend to disagree. I spoke to a Big Gun rep who assured me that the Big Gun CDI is quite different then those made by their competitor and in addition Big Gun warranties their CDI for a full year unconditionally!

“Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.”

That's my 2 cents.....

‹(•¿•)› My financial consultant limited me to $150.00 for a CDI. The Big Gun was $125.00 + shipping so I came in under budget !...lol

Financial Consultant!!!!!!!!Priceless!! If you guys dont hear from me tomorrow its probably because I went home and used that term. Begin the search in my back yard and the key to the DS is in the upper right hand drawer, keep it clean for me!

The kick back claim has a lot to do with how much compression your piston has, and how much advance timing is in the CDI, especially at low rpm idle. Quite simply, too much advance in ignition timing will cause what I call a dead ping. I experienced this when years ago when I ran the RWR CDI in combination with the 14:1 piston. I switched to the Vortex and my problem went away. Many others have reported that the quads idle much smoother with the Vortex as well when running higher compression pistons. This does not mean that the RWR CDI is bad, or that the Procom CDI is bad - Just info for people to have when they are considering mods.

As far as I am concerned, Scoundrel, I welcome all opinions, good or bad. And I rarely get my feathers ruffled over something like this. People will read the posts, and after a while will understand where everyone is coming from.

If you want the best info, you should talk to Mike Young of Big Gun. I just got off the phone with them, and all - ALL - of the Big Gun CDI boxes are now built and programmed by Procom. The curves in the Big Gun boxes are very slightly different than the Procom box. That being said, thats not nessesarily a bad thing. We all know there was some bad history with Procom, I personally would like to see some new improvements - and I can tell from reading these posts, that procom has improved over time. I support that.

Marky,

The e-mail I received from Big Gun did not specify who was providing me the information other then to say “Sincerely Big Gun.” I also don’t recall saying that Procomm doesn’t make the CDI for BG only that I tend to think not because I was told that the BG CDI was not a clone of those sold by Procomm.

I also said “All I can suggest is try it, you are the best person to determine if it works for you. If you feel the supposed kick back or it doesn't perform to your expectations then replace it....” I said this because DSADDICTED did not specify he had made any further modifications such as high compression piston or cams. If he had then I would have recommend he PM some of those here who have a similar setup.

You may welcome “bad” opinions but I don’t!! I don’t believe in giving opinions unless I have first hand experience with a product. People giving opinions on products based purely on hearsay or rumors not only waste time but could cause a financial hardship if someone was to purchase a product based on that opinion. The endless barrage of unfounded opinions can be very confusing to those who are just starting out and my point was that all of us who give opinions should be careful that we are giving accurate information.

I will contact Mike Young as you suggested, if for nothing more then to ask what he thinks the kick back problems comes from. I will also contact Procomm since they are only down the street from me and see what they have to say.

Scoundrel,

I think you are trying really hard on this and I think that can be a good thing. But to be honest, even Big Gun realizes many of the problems in the past with thier older CDIs that were built by Procom. There is post after post with both good and bad results from Procom CDIs. You know, once the word gets out, they they tell two friends, and they tell two friends and so on and so on. But lets not even hint at the fact that these are not built by Procom, because they are. I too believe in accurate info, and thats all my post was about. Good or Bad - thats a judgement call and this is an open forum - good luck with that one. Hammering people for thier opinion will be a tough one thats for sure.

I would say that anyone saying that the Procom CDIs are junk would actually be completly founded based on actual customer posts in this forum. Many people have had exactly the opposite experience, again, based on customer posts in this forum. What does that tell us? Nothing more than the fact that historically, sometimes these CDI fail. For some, its worth it, for some it is not.
